4y or 2.8D

so currently my hilux has a 4y n/a engine in it, something like 69kw at 5400rpm and 180nm at 4600rpm at the flywheel when it was new, i want to do a fair bit of long distance driving and I know that LPG gets scarce and petrol even more so the further you go out, so I was thinking would it be worth it to go for the 2.8D now while I'm low on cash and then a 1kz down the track?

Would I notice any better driveability? Also the hilux has 4.88s in the diffs as std, im not really interested in changing this but it does give me 2850RPM at 100km/h with my 31" tires in 5th, is this a problem and would the diesel be ok with it?

Also as far as I know the diesel is an almost direct changeover? or is tehre a fair bit of fiddling to do (g52 box, gear driven tcase, yn67 extra cab chassis)
I should be able to keep the radiator etc?

Then I can sell my engine and 1000km old LPG system for about $1800? and that should cover me a good 2.8D and other goodies :P

Or perhaps a 5L motor is a better option again or is that even more stuffing around?

gotta use the 3L bellhousing, slave cylinder and clutch master cylinder fluid line.
exhaust is different.
So would need a 3L exhaust system.
Need the 3L fuel lines.
Need the 3L fuel filter housing.
Need the 3L radiator.
Need the 3L wiring harness.
Need the 3L engine mounts or move your ones.
Have to modify the power steering lines.
Need the 3L glow plug timer
Need the 3L vacuum pump set up
Need the 3L fuel tank.
Its a fair bit of work for 60kw at the flywheel.
And will cost more than $1800 easy.
a 5L motor blows your budget right out of the water.
Either way, you will also need an engineers certificate for it as the 3L and 5L were not brought out in the 80 series hilux's that your car is in.
The 3L diesel motor came out with 4.3s as the stock ratios with 31s, so 4.88s will make it the equivalent of running 4.3s with 35s on those ratios.
This will make it rev like crazy on the highway if your running 31s, and also chew the fuel.
To put the 5L motor in your looking at about $3-5k start to finish.
You might get away with $2-4k with the 3L motor start to finish.
Its your motor were talking about and your planning on doing some touring so you want to know that it has been done right.
Save yourself time and hassle and fit another fuel filter as well as diesel can get water in it if your going outback.

you would think it would be easier to just buy a new hilux 2.8d std.

personally i think your mad driving outback in a lux..to rough and uncomfortable..coils,ifs or even sprung under would be better, thats my 2c..

what about twin fuel tanks and lpg?
have awesome long range distance..

but people like there diesels and its your car so do what yo please..

cheer..smiley.

is the lpg tank in the tray?
If so, just get an aftermarket long range fuel tank.
A lot easier than changing motors.

Nah its underneath..

I want the diesel not just cause of the range, but the more accessible torque rather than revving to 4800 when my engine pretty much maxes out at 3800 or it sounds (and feels like) it'll explode.

Hmm.. more expensive than I thought, obviously not just a drop in..

bugger.

maybe consider a rebuild then?
My 3y motor never goes above 3000rpm and thats turning 35s on stock ratios (4.88) and gets me to 120km/h max on the tar.
rebuild wil be cheaper and you will then know it will be reliable.
cheers

my 4y is in brilliant cond, i dont need to rev it and it'll get me anywhere the only downfall is the availability of the fuel, and the range it gets me (250km from 55L of LPG and prob about 450km from 73L petrol).
I think I'll just wait a few years till im off my P's and have much more money and put a 200tdi rover engine or OM617 mercedes in it :P
