GQ Patrol variations??

Hi all, ive been a loyal toyota fan for many years, but unfortunately have come to realise my hilux does not cut the mustard off road.
My plan is to place my t72 turbocharged 4.0L lexus v8 into a GQ patrol to get the best of both worlds - unbreakable suspension, diffs, gearbox and a great v8.
Now the GQ - i know of 3 variations
1 - RB30 3.0L na 6
2 - 4.2 diesel na
3 - 4.2 diesel turbo.
Are these all? If so, can anyone tell me which one has the toughest driveline coupled with the coil springs? Does the 3.0L version have the same box as the 4.2 t/d? Basically i need the toughest as il have somewhere around the 500hp or more mark and i want to run the patrol box, and diffs.
also do they all have coil suspension? i know mq has leafs, do any gq's?"

im sure ill have more questions, really appreciate all your help.
Blake

leaf springs only came out in the utes on the gqs most of the running gear is all the same cant be sure about the 3lts tho!
the motors they came out with are the rb30 (3ltr carby), tb42 (4.2ltr petrol carby) tb42e (4.2ltr petrol fuel injected) td42 (4.2ltr diesel) and the td42t (4.2ltr diesel turbo'd)

be aware of dx models as some (not sure if all  ) come with drum rear breaks!
the leaf sprung utes I believe only had the full floating larger rear diff but may be wrong!

I have an 88 ST wagon and it has strong running gear 4.11 diffs some have the 4.3s but that wont worry you much with the power. plenty of aftermarket stuff to increase the strength more so tho!

The rb 30 engine patrols come with a weaker gearbox. Not worth using.

stick with 4.2 driveline, probably pick up a cheap duel fuel with a blown motor ready for a transplant or maybe even a diesel

do both the petrol and diesel 4,2 have the strong box? i know with toyota they have a box/ diff codes on the build plate on the firewall...do patrols have these, and if so what codes for diff/ box am i looking for? do you think the box will hold my motor with a h/d clutch etc?
thanks

Sounds like a great set up.

I have nothing to offer knowledge wise.... except there was another motor in the gq's not mentioned - the late models had a 2.8l turbo diesel option too. I have no idea about their other running gear though.. ie same or smaller gearbox etc...

These late model ones with this diesel often come up cheap in very good condition. I dont know if condition worries you.

Also how good is the 4.2 gear boxes with that kind of power? i would have thought a c4 conversion or something may be the go. I know the marks reckons the 4.2 auto is fine behind a holden 5L, but recomends mods for the ls1.

Cheers
Stew

both 4.2 petrol and diesel run the same box but with different bellhousings i will look at my compliance plates 2nite and see what i can make of it

Don't forget the RD28T (2.8 six cylinder turbo diesel) - these cars had factory 4.6 diffs IIRC.

As said, i'd go for a low KM petrol (TB42 or TB42E) as they are cheap as chips. There were even factory options for sway bar disconnects and rear lockers.

They came in MQ/MK, GQ and GU. Mainly in the leaf sprung utes in MQ/MK and GQ, but can also be found in some of the GU wagons (not sure what engine or spec though).

I think some of the Safaris came with turbo from the factory. Some of them also have automatics with the 4.2 diesel.

I know only the imports had auto option behind the TD42 (SWB, LWB or Hi-Top) , and only the Safaris had a TD42T option. Bit of a shame really.

The rd28t had the smaller gearbox.
Agree that a 4.2 petrol is what you want, the 4.2 petrol and diesel have the same drivelines (large gearbox) - the 4.2 petrol is a lot cheaper though.
Rear diffs could be the h260 or h233, i really don't think you'd have any problems with the 233 - especially if you put a locker in it (4 pinion) plenty of people have put big power through them - depends on other factors a lot too - (driver, terrain, gear reduction, tyres, vehicle weight etc)
Auto gearboxes were used in zd30 GU patrols (they run the same transfer as gu 4.2/4.5/4.8petrols 4.2diesel and gq 4.2d/p) - i know nothing of adaptors though!

would it matter what gear box you got the rb30 box has been proven to be pretty stong have seen many gqs with with turbos pushing big power with out problems but other wise buy a 4.2 petty for cheap and drop your v8 in dont worry about getting the biggest nissan diff if you had a v8 running on yota diffs the nissan diff is going to shit it in...

macneil - mate i basically want the strongest to start with so i have no issues...and the longer gearing of the 4.2 box would suit the v8 better...

so the smallest diffs in the gq's are h233's? 233mm is still a huge diff, so i doubt ill have issues - and i hear there are less ratios available for the 260 anyway?

Yea the 233 is the smallest, i'm not sure of the ratios on the 260, but it really isn't very common, some utes, 3.0 gu's, and a random selection seem to be fitted with it.
The 233 would likely have a ratio of 3.9, 4.1, 4.6 - you can see this on the plate on the firewall, drivers side, it'll say HG39, HG41, HG46 etc

You can easily find a really cheap carby tb42. Comes with the strong gearbox normally 4.1 diff ratio's and sometimes even a factory rear locker. I beleive there is no differance to drivetrain components between the TD42 and TB42. Only bellhousing.

But as Money Killer said a GU front diff would be ideal if running bigger rubber than 33".

Hope this helps mate.

Cheers, Shane
