buying a disco

hey guys
just wondering what to look for when i buy a disco. im trying to get a 93+ model. but what probs do they have?
if any one can help it would be good

Ooohh where could I start!
There are plenty of weak points with the Discovery.
Good to see you are looking at 1993+, as the early ones have 10 spline axles that like to go BOOM when driven too hard or given bigger tyres to spin. The standard diff centre is quite weak too, having blown 2 rear diff's on 32"s, i've now got a Maxi-drive.
Syncro's on 1st and 2nd on the manual boxes are known to wear pretty quickly. Usually around the 150k mark. Although if you get a 94 or later you get the R380 box which is a lot better than the LT77.
Leaks! There will probably be plenty of leaks on most Disco's you look at.
The more you 4wd, the more you will get too.
If you're looking at big tyres, Disco's are hard to get big rubber under.
For 34-35", you'll need 2-3" suspension lift, 2" body lift and you'll need to cut the guards and fit flares.
Unlike an 80 series, 3-4" suspension and you can fit 35"'s!
Parts can be quite expensive, but there's a fair bit of wrecking going around.
I could go on, I've had a bit of bad luck with my 92. Although this is what i've gathered from the past 2 years of ownership!
I'm sure everyone can elaborate on my points with much more detail too!
But if you like them, get one!

Hey Ranover,
I can back up what david said. I've had mine 3 years now and wouldn't sell it......to a friend!! Rebuilt g'box at 100k, t'case at about 115k, leaks everywhere! I've heard its called a "factory built chassis lubrication system".
Do yourself a favour, buy a cruiser or patrol!

Yeah but they are cheap.
And nice to drive. 98 model disco over the GU patrol i had any day for drivability. But the patrol for toughness and clearance etc.
v8's are thirsty.

had mine for 4 year and yes they are cheaper to buy than the patrol and cruiser but in my oppion are the best allround truck i have had (suzuki, pajaro, patrol and crusier) cant speak for other mods,
BUT if you want to push it off road be prepared for the up grades. Mine is the 3.5l 93 24 spline, i started with 2" suspension, air lockers F/B and 31" muds having to cut 4" off the rear guards to clear.
First trip out front cv went so in went maxidrive axles F/B with 110 c/v. broken 2 more c/v since but with 34 extreme treckers but to make them fit had to put on rangie spare flares and 2"body lift.
cause that has stuffed up low range im about to put in new CW/P had them since christmas but got to get to Sydney to get tem put in another $800
Butin my oppinion they are still the best 4b i have had both on and off road
but remember its only you will know if its for you or not
