Hey Guy, Just need a bit of advise, how does the tdi compare to the v8's? Any must knows about them? and how do they compare to GQ's and 80's as i am also considering them but really like my v8 disco so wouldn't mind sticking to the code.
Thanks
Alex

From what I can gather the TD5 is a lot more desirable if your budget extends far enough.

I know someone with a 99 TD5 auto for sale. Gets 9.1lt/100km when empty gets 9.2lt/100km when full.

If you allredy have a V8 disco stick with it and get LPG injection..
Land rover diesels are just to unpredictable and when they do have a brain fart its usualy a major fix IMHO the only oiler that land rover got right was the 5 bearing job 4 banger in the series 3 and early fender ..
They went the right way here in aus when building the S3 stage 1 and county by using isuzu engins if only they kept with the plan and kept on using isuzu 4bd1's they would have been more popular ..

tdi = touring
V8 on LPG = daily driver
get both and you have best of both worlds.

Crap, the tdi if maintained is easily as good as a V8, after 2 V8 rangies i love my tdi - it actually has torque where you need it without revving its tits off.

Gemini engine 200 tdi was Landrovers first proper serious diesel engine. At the time it was miles ahead of most fourby engines . Only other DI then was the 4bd1 AFAIK.
2.25 5MB was a lovable slug
Hot spots can fall out and it leaks badly..........not any stronger than petrol engine either.
The Disco puts out nice power and feels quicker than Patrol GQ 4.2 D...........especially the auto that I had. Good fuel economy on TDI. I take it bits over there are expensive though ?

Have a 2004 Disco TD5. If you service it regularly it will serve you well. Really good on juice too. If you are going to use it for a daily commute, would suggest only if trip is 20 clicks or more. Oilers need to heat to correct operating temperatures otherwise acid build up can be a problem. Get 9,6km/lt, 12,2 towing a caravan. Keep safe!

Comparing the rover TDI's (200Tdi & 300Tdi):
200Tdi is considered more reliable, because of timing belt issues with 300Tdi. Power is a little less, because stock boost pressure is lower (can be adjusted though). Some parts, e.g. cylinder heads are hard to get now (I am lead to believe a 300Tdi head can be substituted).
300Tdi is a little smoother, because of dual pressure injectors. Timing belts must be replaced at shorter intervals, because of crap pulleys. Broken timing belts can result in bent push rods, or at worst, broken rocker arms.
They generally perform ok and are reliable if serviced properly. IMHO better performance than the 3.5 carby V8. They easily keep up with or slightly better NA diesel landcruiser or patrols on the highway, but not as much grunt down low (though acceptable).
Stock turbos can be adjusted for a little more boost, and the fuel injection pump can easily be adjusted for better performance (need and egt gauge to ensure temps are are acceptable when fuel is increased).
They are not prone to overheating if the cooling system is up to scratch, but suffer badly (heat treated aluminium head develops soft spots, leading to blown head gaskets) during bad overheating or coolant loss. IMHO it is worthwhile insurance to fit a low coolant alarm (readily available and easy to fit).
The stupid plastic plugs in the top of the thermostat housing and radiator should be replaced with brass items. The black plastic coolant header tank is prone to splitting along the seam (replacement white units give good service).
The TD5 engine performs much better and can produce outstanding performance with a chip upgrade (but ask on knowledgeable Land Rover forums as some are better than others). Apart from issues like loose bolt in oil pump drive (due to not using loctite) and oil in the injector harness, they are a very reliable engine and very well thought out.
