ordered a new gearset from diahatsu, none in australia and they are 820 ex japan. so about 8 weeks away and you will need to pay for the gearset upfront and there is no refund if it is wrong.
The only way you are going to get one in the next week it to hope that you can find a rebuilt one somewhere or a good second hand gearset. we looked at 7 sets and none were any good. I personally wouldnt buy a second hand box unless it had a really really good warranty.
second hand you will pay around $1000 and rebuilt with gears $2200.

diahaustu wreckers at Archerfield in brissy, second hand about 800. 30 day warranty. Other than that, try a gearbox guy, they can strip it down, find out whats wrong.
I had mine done at Currumbin. 2nd hand box 500, made a good one out of two with new bearing kit - all up about $1400. Not perfect, but its done the job.
I know your not on the Gold Coast, but...

afew of the gearsets come from diahatsu wreckers and had the same problem as the ones we already had. Like you say heath piece afew together and you might be lucky.

I got a price from Daihatsu 18 mths ago for a brand new gearbox and transfer case to suit mine- it was around $3000 complete from memory.
Could be worth pricing just the box from Daihatsu- you may be surprised?

on a side not, a 78-79-100's cruiser box's are around 3400-3700 from toyota. How cheap is that really.

Have you thought of an engine/gearbox/tcase swap from a Rocky or Hilux? A 2.8 diesel would be sweet. Maybe a transmission from an old Hilux/ Hiace (minus tranny cover extension, plus your transfer case) might fit? As you are aware, quite a bit of parts commonality due to Daihatsu being owned by Toyota.

Just searched some old posts and that gearbox/ transfer case price was $3800 for both.
Big $$$ and lots of headaches to do an engine & drivetrain swap..... Gary the Rocky has a lot in common with Toyotas- I don't think the Feroza shares any bits at all?

I remember reading somewhere that the only difference between the tcases of the Rocky and Feroza is that the Rocky was cast iron and the Feroza was cast alloy, with similar differences for the gearbox. If that is the case then the gearboxes should have similar mounts and bolt-up patterns, coupled with the Toyota sourced engines ahead of the gearbox, meaning a possibility of the Rocky gearbox being an option (and a stronger one at that).
I am not sure, and are happy to be corrected if I am wrong.
Try a few wreckers to get an eyeball at the two side-by-side.

is that for a H151F or a gay R151F though? (turbo or NA?) the R151F isn't worth a pinch of poo in a cruiser - a good box for a V6 4runner or turbo bundera but not up to the tough stuff in a cruiser.

AJ on another note I've been in contact with a guy who races a Feroza and the info from him was third gear normally goes. Apparently there is one part in particular that fails and one of his crew had fabricated up a replacement part and since then they have had no failures.
This gearbox is used behind a 1.8 litre turbo (must be a HD-E bored out?)
I was going to post info on his rig in the Daihatsu section but he didn't want it posted on the internet (and since I asked about posting the info/ pics he hasn't replied to further questions

)
There's also the guy in Sydney with the turbo 1.6 engine who has had new internals made for his box- I posted the name of the company who did the work in the Daihatsu section a while back.
If mine ever goes I'll be pricing a new box complete from Daihatsu and running Redline Shockproof oil in it from day one.

OK, the prob with the box is most likely a bearing. It makes a horrible "scraping" noise in 1st, 2nd and third. Fourth sounds fine and fifth has a bit of noise. She still shifts perfectly, etc., but sounds f#$@in terrible in the lower gears. So, I reckon a gearbox specialist should be able to replace the bearing(s) and have her up and running again nice and quick. The only prob for me is that I've just moved back to Melbourne, and have lost touch with all my old contacts, so need to find somebody that'll do a reasonable job.
Just a quick Q, has anybody actually pulled their box out of a Feroza themselves b4? If so, was it one of those sh!tty jobs you'd never do again, or is it a reasonably easy one? I don't have the workshop facilities I had in Sydney, so it'll be a tad more diificult here. If somebody's done it b4 and reckons it is a real sh!t of a job, then I'll pay somebody to pull it out and put it back in....would rather save the dollars on that though.
Cheers,

I've done it at home. Not too bad. Getting back in is a PITA, especially lining up the spline. Can be done though. If you can, replace the clutch, thrust and sprigot bearings at teh same time.
Looking back, theres about 3-4hrs labour to remove and replace, so your really only saving about $150 - $200.... the next I had to do it, I got them to do the lot, just couldn't be bothered at the time.
Yeah sounds like bearing on the main shaft, cause 4th is on a different shaft. However, I had done the input cluster also, so I had to make 1 out of two.
And yeah, I had done the 'box twice.
