Hydro assist or full hydro?

Hi guys, i have a Gq Comp truck over in WA which up until now has only ever run 36" peades and 37" x-terrains. Its time to go to some 40's or 42's but i know that i will have no chance to turn them with my current set up when i have the pressures down to 4Psi.

Currently i am running a GU front diff and GU power steering Box. I also dont really like the idea of full hydro as i wish to maybe do some speed events where i would obviously be running smaller tyres and would like the safety of knowing that if the steering fluid gets hot, im not going to loose all my steering.

I would like to here from the guys running GQ or GU's what the biggest tyres they think are safe to run before you start doing serious damage to the GQ GU diffs? i.e ripping knuckles off or king pins collapsing.

Also what are the pro's and cons to having Full HYDRO as to Hydro-Assist.

One of the guys over here who runs the blue WA tuff truck 100S ran Hydro assist for only one comp before he changed it to full hydro as he said it wasn't doing anything. is this the case with most full hydro or just maybe a bad setup?

they had metal go through the system which made it useless. A hydro assist done properly is all you will need.

GU's are an expensive option and you will not ahieve a good final result for the $'s.

Thanks for the reply, I have the GU diff and box already on my truck and yes it was $$$ but i think worth every $$ i still only run standard axles and CV's and so far have only sheared one axle.

Has anyone run two hydro pumps into the same steering box? i ask as i have a second power steering pump laying around.

Hi mate.
We run 40" stickies on our GU diff, and havent broken one yet. Its a lot to do with how you drive. Its a matter of seeing the car bind up and stopping before one lets go. There are definately stronger options available, but the GU will hold up to it if you drive accordingly.

We also run full hydro, but hydro assist would be more than enough.

Do guys over east run bigger than 40" on the GU diffs or do they go to something more custom?


What running gear are you running on ur 40" sticky's do you run std GU CV's and axles?

Yeh we are running stock CV's and axles. I do believe if you went any bigger than 40-42", you would start to be really pushing it, but they seem to cope so far.

One other thing to consider with hydo assist , if you blow a line you still have some steering.

This is a really good point and one of the main reasons why i want to go hydro assist over full. also if you over heat in full hydro you loose ALL YOUR STEERING and that would not be good in a speed event.

What sort of reduction are you running? i just have a set of marks 85% do you run dual cases or anything like that?

Yeh we are just running 85% in a stock 4.2 petrol carby with 4.1s. Its not ideal, but we get by, and i think with 4.8s, it would be low enough again.
