Air Filter or Pre-cleaner for a TD42 with Intercooler

Hi guys, I am in the middle of fitting an intercooler to a TD42 in a GQ.
I sent an email to K&N regarding a filter for the precleaner and was wondering if the GU one would go in the GQ prefilter.
I am advised by them that it does not fit.
Most interesting is that they also state that the K&N for the prefilter for the GQ is not suitable to be used as a Primary Filter and now i not sure what to do????
Question?? Is the GQ prefilter suitable for use as a Primary Filter?? Damn?
What else are people doing?
Cheers guys

Search for ZD30 airbox... that seems to be the mod of the month.

I was in same boat as you are in atm.
I investigated different types of filters to replace my pre-cleaner as I did away with the main cleaner it as well. What I found was all aftermarket pre-cleaners did not have the same filtering factor as the original paper pre- cleaner as a result I stayed with the original paper cleaner.

zd30 does not quite go in the same place as the gq prefilter, unless you drill some holes, standard holes leave the zd30 filter about 50mm off the guard, some pvc will fix this

normally people are hooking up to a norkel anyways, and i would not want my air box to seal to one side of the sheet metal and the snorkel seal to the other,
i found it easy to cut the flanged lid off the gu air box and use some silicone hose to join the air box and snorkel

Interesting, did you determine that the paper GQ pre-filter is suitable as a primary filter though or is it just better that the other prefilters on the market?
Obviously there is a fair bit at stake if i get this wrong...
anyone got a pic of their air filter setup since fitting an intercooler?
Surely everyone that has an intercooler on a TD42 would have had to deal with this issue i would have thought?? I cant see how the original Air filter set up would be able to be retained?
Cheers guys and thanks for the advise.

Try calling Ryco customer service they have a couple of different listings for the GQ prefilter, try p/n HDA5783, there is also a K&N p/n E-3002 filter available but it has to come from US as it is not common in AUS, measure your old filter and do a search on K&N website, but at your own risk. As has been stated GU airbox bolts straight in, had one in my GQ but had no aux battery though, so if you have one don't know if will fit. I used GQ prefilter and welded a 3" elbow to bottom(had to cut guard to fit) run round below exhaust straight onto turbo( if low mount). If high mount just buy GU one, if you can find one.

I think what you will find is that even if you found a suitable filter to fit, the precleaner housing wont flow enough for the turbo.
I'm in the same situation (GQ turbo conversion) and Im fitting a GU TD42T airbox which is similar to the ZD30 airbox except for flanges

Point taken, and I am still to do vacuum tests etc, but I still am making with a DTS turbo set at 14psi and DTS top mount IC 86rwkw on standard pump and 100rwkw with dieselgas turned on at 500c egt using the prefilter housing. I only used the filter housing as I wasn't able to find a factory housing at the time, but the prefilter seems to be doing the job for this setup. Might find it restrictive if going garrett etc though.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback and a couple of PM's on this too.
I actually have a GU IV in the drive also with a TD42T and i had assumed that the pre filter on my GQ was the same as the Primary on my GU. I will have a good look on the weekend and get the ruler out and let you all know how different they are.
Might even take the GU air filter out and see how much it misses by in the GQ
Cheers

The factory GU airbox has a 3.5 inch outlet. You never know with more air and a retune you may do better?
