Im getting sick of blowing diffs and having inverted leafs and stupid rear drum... i want to build my lux into a comp truck and im wondering if there would be any chassis that i could dump the lux body onto?

Yep it can be done but you will need to make sure you have an engineer involved from the get go. Also make sure you can do the work or at least a large portion of it yourself as that is what will cost you a LOT.

Daz on here has an awesome example of a Lux on an 80 chassis in the members thread.

do you think this would be easier than replacing diffs, coil conversion, chassis supporting?

and just using the 80 series running gear?

is there any other chassis that are coiled that the lux body could go onto? something older maybe?

In some ways its easier, all depends on your skill level and what you can and cant do in your state.

well if i can get a cheap 80 series chassis with turbo diesel it will save me from doing coil conversion, diff swap, chassis strengthening, working out power steer, getting stronger CV's and Axels, doing a driveline lift and doing a engine swap. if i manage to pull this off all i would need is a suspension lift, body lift, comp tray, bucket seats, tyres, diff lockers.

This is a good idea, and not to rat on boofs or daz's work, as it's looking fantastic, but in my eyes i see this as really a killjoy. Because at that point, you're driving a slightly lightened 80 seires, not a hilux anymore.

I see your point but at least to those that dont know it still looks like a Lux. And in the case of Dazs it looks extremely cool as well.





Also from what I have found its a LOT easier to get a low ride height this way than to work off the Lux chassis, which imo is a good thing.

cant agree more.. ln106 bodies look hot... mine is getting long travel ifs grafted onto the front just for something different... i looked into the 80s chassis and it is pretty simple, just need t do body mounts... with a bit of thought they would be pretty simple

Maybe get a different place to set up the diffs.

I have done 1 crownwheel on 32"s and it was only because of water in the diff for a long time.

I am running a rn 46 lux body on a 1991 80 series chasis with all late model brakes etc
also runnig a 2jz from a supra

yeah blowing diffs on 33s geez something not right there myself and mates are running 37s on lux diffs fine only braking mayb 1 a year, i broke an input on transfer before i broke a diff, lux drivelines arnt as weak as u think.

this is my old truck

it has 79 series cruiser front end and surf rear all coiled then airbaged
i use all 80 series links fro rear and 79 series spring mounts etc

it was good, really good

but the 80 series chassis'd truck is far supieror for hi speed and also chassis flex is much less, its a much better choice

legally depending on what model lux u want (before 90) the easiest would be to fit it to a range rover of the same year (i dont like em) but later u could fitt toyota diffs
rangies have a good rear axle mounting design ie a frame standard would be easier to get engineered due to it being the same vintage

ok do u need it to get regoed? that is your no.1 question

the next thing is i doubt u will get the hilux body on over 80 series running gear without moving the drivetrain
u will not fit the radiator in the engine bay with a landcruiser straight six

ultimately what drive train combination do u really want petrol or diesel

i have 2 trucks 1 diesel and 1 petrol
for me the diesel is more suited to long distance touring
the petrol as a powerhouse for ultimate off road ability with its much broader rev range and higher power output to flick the mud out of the tyres

but the lux body is the best thing once u have it on there lighter better approach angle, clearance and IMHO looks heaps better

What gearbox and t-case are you running behind the 2J-z?

its a bit of everything
td bundy r150 (154 came out in supra)
transfer is 60 series split case (full manual no vacume) with pto adapter for hydraulic pump
out put shaft and rear shaft out put is from late 45 series (to get the transbrake)

I agree with Thrashlux that using the cruiser engine in an older Lux cab will be tight, the newest shape cabs though are huge.



If it were me I would sell your current one off whole and start from scratch with a rolling chassis, cab of choice and engine and driveline of choice also

And blowing one diff makes you feel you need a complete chassis and driveline swap?

Inverted leaves... do some research and spend a few bucks fixing up your suspension set up. I haven't owned a hilux before but i have seen some very good set ups.

Drum rear... having trouble pulling the 2.2 up from its 95km/h top speed? Seriously tho, drums aren't as bad as theyre made out to be. Certainly dont warrant a chassis swap.

Im not trying to have a go at you, but just helping you decide wether you actually need this or not.

The 2.2 will easily get to 125km/h. I've had mine up to 140km/h.. briefly. It's the scariest thing I've ever done

I run 42's on a Luxy rear diff and high pinion froint diff and have only ever blown 1 diff and that was the 80 series high pinion. So your diff must have been on its way out mate.
