Hilux Steering Wheel Column loose

Post by ToNkA »

Well I had full lock on the steering wheel trying to park the truck last night and while really turning the wheel hard (I have no power steer) Something when crack-twang-scrichhh and then the steering wheel column came loose, just moved around.

The tilt mechanism still works and locks into place when you move it, but the whole column just wobbles side to side and up and down, moves a good 3 inches either way.

I read there is some collapsable part in their designed to brake in accidents, I am thinking maybe that has busted, but I have no idea.

Anyone had this happen or have an idea of what the hell has happened.

Will pull appart the column today, so any ideas, let me know.

Tonka.

steering coolum loose

Post by toysuzi »

it sounds like you have brocken the coluum cage (body)
my lux did the same (after rolling it) but check the 10mm head bolts first but if the cage is damiged it will cost you heaps
from memery $300 to $400 new.

undo the coluum plastic shrould (4-5 screws) & check for loose bolts or brocken cage

I dont tend to like booty fab when it come to steering components, I should just use blu-tac or even some chewy. :?

Well I removed the bracket and it was totally destroyed at the bottom mount, had a hole ripped through it.

Found one for $50, so replacing it tomorrow.
