smoky overheating 1hz 105

I just got back from the beach this weekend.. the back of my cruiser and front of my camper trailer are covered in black soot. and it overheated badly when pushed.

I didn't see any great plumes of smoke in the mirror but my mate said it was smoky.. (I said the same about his.. but he has no black tailgate..)

It is non turbo for now.. (maybe one day $ permitting)

It seems low on power too, but seems to pull strong like a narrow power band from 3200rpm to 3600 rpm. I don't usually rev it this high but was forced to. ( I like 2500-3200)

I don't want everybody to say injectors, as $ are tight and injectors are expensive. Is there something else I can check first?

I don't know much service history but I replaced the coolant and did oil + oil filter change 2000 kms ago.

Clean/replace the air filter and check the intake is free from obstruction (could be a rubber flap inside a deteriorated pipe so have a good look)

I had a problem in mine where the hose which connects from the rocker cover to the inlet was allowing oil to get into the inlet.

This was because the breather hose was ran in a way that it had a low point (if you get me, it was a downward loop...) and oil settled in the bottom of the hose and eventually sucked into the inlet.

I have since run the hose in an up loop so oil would have to travel up hill to get into the inlet.

It has kept my inlet dry and most likely reduced smoke.

No, I haven't adjusted the fuel settings ( I don't know which one the smoke screw is) I would be more than happy to wind it back a little to give it a try, If someone will tell me which one it is. :D

Dont adj anything if you havent touched anything..before the issue.

Do as stated above, all filter, check hoses etc.

The revs you gave it will do no harm, prob more good.

yeah from the reading I've done it seems I am trying to baby it a bit much and as long as I stay away from the red line everything under that is all good. I will do an air and fuel filter change and check pipes etc. see how it goes.

Ok well air filter seemed clean until I took it out.. and the fuel filter  had what I can only describe as bits in it... lots of them. Haven't had a chance to drive yet as seatbelts still out from roll bar install.
