my Sierra 1.3 temp gauge reads nothing on the highway? works fine at normal city speeds 0kph to say 70kph, but as you hit 80 - 110kph the needle drops to the line or just below it :? :? :?

then continues to stay here until i slow down at servo's to fuel up or traffic lights ect...just dont get it? i assumed that it might have been working and that the air at highway speed was cooling it too much? or may i have the wrong coolant? as in its keepin the engine too cool?

its got a brand new radiator in it...should i just fit an aftermarket water temp sender to the radiator?

Hows your thermostat, sounds like its jammed open and over cooling.

Nope, thermostats are silent in opperation. To test you have to imerse in water and heat the water watching the thermostats response to the heat. They are marked at what temp they open and close at.

I vote for thermostat I replaced one not long ago because it was jammed open causing the same problem you have.

also keep in mind if theres no coolant to trigger the thermostat itll read cold... have you checked the radiator is acutally full?

Thermostats are pretty hard to open with your fingers so i guess a little bit of pressure from the hose won't do it. I'm guessing its buggered. It's not hard to take it off and check it in hot water with a thermometer.

If there was that much coolant loss the motor would have been well and truly cooked if it was driven any distance.

the clicking noise you hear will be the small hole that is in the thermostat with a little moving "plug" the clicking noise is the little plug moving.

you could also have an electrical fault within the gauge or sender. earth out the coolant temp sender and make sure that the gauge has full operation.
