hi all.Have recently picked up a second hand winch for my hilux. Is a 9500 cant find the brand on it,but it works fine.
My question is does plasma last ok on them as a mate from ARB has told me to watch the heat affecting the rope from the drum.It has cable at the moment in reasonable condition and roller fairlead but to save weight etc i wouldnt mind going rope and a hawse fairlead.
Any help would be appreciated and also what size rope?thanks

Powering the winch out against the brake (such as lowering yourself down a hill) "can" create heat in the drum, but with newer rope technology that is more resistant to heat its something that should be in the back of your mind, but of no real concern when deciding to go for rope.
10mm or 3/8 is probably the best size to go for even though its rated well above what the original wire cable is.
There are several good threads floating around, do a search for things like "winchline" or "plasma" are do the research for yourself.

You should be more than fine with any of the new ropes, if you think it might be getting too hot stop and give it a break, Ive seen people drip water from a bottle onto the rope drum to cool it down (no different to winching through cold muddy water I suppose).
I wont ever run steel cable anymore as its usually the missus running the rope out and she HATES steel.
Lots of people run plasma type rope on lowmounts and I have never actually heard of someone melting any, only rumours of it "can" happen.

As stated above, It's when your powering out that your winch will generate heat.
It' not something you'll normally do, but if you need to just do it in short bursts as the winch is not really designed for that use.

I would stick to steel cable as it will last a lot longer than rope. Especially because you are only using it occassionally the weather will weaken it before usage will. Hope this makes sence.

As for low mounts and rope we are selling a 9500lb winch $895 that has an external brake which makes it perfect for rope.
