hey guys.

iv gotta change this seal as iv been putting it off for too long and now the oil is leaking wayyy to fast. iv got quiet limited knowledge but have a rough idea what to do..

is there anyone out there who can tell me what to be careful of and what problems I might run into? and does anybody know how much the gearbox and t case weighs together as I hope to keep them together

cheers all :)

Pretty easy job with the right tools.

Farken heavy mate, unless you are built like Arnie you will need a mate or 2. Getting it out on your own is easy. Putting it back in on your own and lining it up, lying on the ground with just a trolley jack does not = a fun time...

pretty easy job getting the box out as the bloke above me said can be a bit of a bastard getting it back in make sure u got a few mates around to help gettin it in and out definatly reccomend using a transmission jack you can hire them from your local kennards or equipment hire joint. or normal trolley jack with some wood just makes it a bit harder.make sure you have a tool for lining up the clutch plate can be bought from supercheap think i paid 12 bucks for mine saves u putting the transmission up and down all day tryin to get the clutch lined up. and when removing the old oil seal make sure u get a good stab at it and try not too push it in too far as it can go back and drop out of the housing and into the sump (still stays on the crank but drops out of the housing and can be an absolute shit to get back up and out) kinda hard to explain just diont push it too far in whilst tryin to get it out.

sweet as thanks for that. I'll look into one of those aligners. I heard getting them aligned was a bit of a bastard. the way it's looking I might be trying to do it on my own which'll be fun.. I rekon I'm gunna try lift the box up and down using ratchet straps attached to the rock sliders.. should cradle it and I'll find a way to let it down slowly. I'm guessing the gearbox won't sit right on straps will it? it'll be top heavy and try roll I rekon but itll be fun nevertheless :)

cheers all

One thing to watch for is if there is a groove worn into the crank where the seal has run. If there is don't put the seal in quite as far. A new seal running in a groove will wear out quickly.

yeah in guessing ther will be a decent groove in there given the condition of everything else iv changed.. was half considering going out and buying a speedy sleeve just incase. any idea what there worth or where to get them?

An easy way to get the old seal out, without the risk of marking the crank with a screw driver. Is to get a small self tapping screw and screw it into the old seal, then grab onto it with a pair of pliers and pull out the seal.

Change ya clutch spigot bearing while ya in there. Also check ya clutch through out bearing too.

You can take ya transfer off first to make things lighter. I did this by myself on the side of the road. Remember to drain the gearbox oil first if ya do it this way. Otherwise you will end up with oil every where. I found this out with a mouth full of oil. :bad-words:
