'85 Hilux 2L-some questions from a newbie

Hi All,
My young bloke just got a Hilux. We are in the process of checking it over and fixing a few things as we go.
Just a couple of questions:
1. Is there a thermostat that opens earlier than the standard one which starts opening at 88-90 deg?
2. What basic improvements will get a little more out of a 2L?
3. What's the cheapest most effective way of sourcing and fitting a turbo?
I have owned and worked on a numer of 4WDs petrol and diesel and have fitted turbo kits so don't mind a challenge.
Any help would be appreciated.

firstly, welcome to outers, secondly, do a search through the lux bible in toyota tech section, use search function at top of page for what you are after.
check for sale threads for parts you are after, theres always bargains there.
as for basic improvements, umm you could get some extractors and exhaust, that would help a bit.
good luck with the build

welcome, to be honest without a turbo i dont think you are going to pull to much more out of it. Biggest thing that has helped mine is running decent oil and filters and regular services. You could try fitting a snorkel if you havent already done so this may help it on the highway, and as mentioned an exhaust and decent extractors may get more out of it.
I think the thermostat for mine atm is an 88 degree one which i sourced from repco for 30bucks or something. as for turbos checkout ebay there are some on there sometimes. just make sure your engine is in decent condition they can handle the turbo but sometimes they create excessive blow-by depending on engine condition.
hope this helps!!

hey mate,
replace the thermostat, flush out the engine radiator coolant and get the radiator overhauled.
this should make the cooling system a bit more economical.
As for power, go a turbo system off an import surf and just turn the fuel up.
Snorkel for cleaner air, replace the air and fuel filter.
Go a mandrel bent exhaust system with a straight through muffler or no muffler if going turbo. Say about a 2 1/2inch sports system.
If going bigger tyres, change the ratios to the 4.88 from the petty hiluxes of the time.
Regular servicing will help.
Cheers
Dan

Unless he plans to go swimming, snorkle does 0 for performance, you need to be doing 400k's n hour to get any effect. You can get many different thermostats.. go repco for them... Forget anythinng bar a turbo or supercharcher for performance. Turbo by far the simplest... I did one for under 600 bucks non intercooled. Just make sure you use goodquality water n oil hose.. good clamps..
Keep ya services up, i prolly would leave it natural if its got over 250-300 thou on it though, just askin for dramas if you boost it after that. Ebay spec new turbo's are piles of shit.. wreckers if cheap, hunt for a ct20 or a td04 mitsubishi item, then the stocko 2lt manilfold and associated xover pipes n crap like that... Front mount cooler is easy and prolly the best, i think you can fit a skyline topmount or wrx topmount on a lux ontop, but then its just drawing hot air so pretty silly anyways..
Hope all goes well!

Maybe pop the tappet cover off it, check the state of inside, if its all gunky n crap under there, thats usually a good indication of the condition of the motor apparently.. Try get a hold of some engine flush fluid.

Thanks for the advice guys.
Where do you get the 160 deg thermo? I can only find a Triden high flow at standard opening temp.
Thanks again

I have put diesel/gas injection on mine and it make a HUGE difference. That being said, it is heaps cheaper to do a turbo.

a good exhast does wonders , I fitted a straight through mufler with extractors and 2 1/4 pipe and its added about 10% more power to my little beast and I would leave the hot thermostat because thats what stops wear in the cylinder bores ,heat also helps burn all the diesel for economy, just get a good radiator and dont forget to clean the injectors
