any rattling ... my wifes had a slight bang and rattle sounded like a bolt in a washing machine ..was the torque converter ... or somewhere thereabouts. quoted around 8k to rebuild. bought a second hand one from southern 4x4 for $1600 and spent about $400 on beer and oils/filters.
played southern 4x4 and imlachs for best price.
good luck - took myself 6 hours to remove and then 6 hours to refit...yes im a slow worker but at least it worked when finished !!

possibly busted the splines of the input shaft to the xfer case... few of the guys on the vic pajero forum have had this happen.

Just about to mention this as well.
From memory the output shaft from the auto is much smaller diameter than the Gen 2 I haven't got the exact dimensions here but I'll find out and post back.

Hi Frank,
the NP is such a great vehicle to drive, its a real pity that certain things have taken a backward step, eg companion shafts, input shafts & even the air con (in the NS).
do you think that the gearset that Mark has made for the NP will in any way effrect the reliablity of the said shaft, or is this shaft the one that goes in to the new shaft??
cheers

Here is an update,
The tranny guys that will be installing my gearset say that they have done a couple of these on Gen 3 pajs. Mostly with 200k plus mileage.
He says that they believe that the faulty component is the shaft that has female splines, ie the one that Mark has remade. So hopefully that is a good solution to the problem?

Well I've read it's the actual output shaft from the auto stripping splines and sometimes breaking outright (from the Paj Club forum).
These are mainly from vehicles that have been used for heavy towing and high mileage examples.
There's no question that the t/case 3.15 input gear (where the auto output shaft mates to) is superior in quality to the factory item but I don't think the problem is there.
FYI the IRS rear end is much stronger than the Gen 2 live axle.

Hi mate,
by that I assume you mean what vehicle,
We bought a very low k (64,000) NP Exceed 3.5l
We are keeping the NL for the 'farm' vehicle.
BTW there is just no comparison between the NP & NL, the NP is great to drive, the 5 speed auto is fantastic & makes the 3.5l motor seem much better even though it is still the same old motor.
I have no regrets about the purchase, having some 3.15 gears fitted in the new year as well as the ARB front locker
cheers.
