Hilux Cardinals

Post by Pesky Pete »

Just some food for thought. I have built a pretty similar truck to yours except I used a rover v8 with rover auto and transfer. End result is that I cant keep shafts in the front. The Double Cardin does not really help with an increase in angle. I am currently building a custom shaft using a hilux CV and RHS. The CV will be mounted on a short piece of Axle so that it has the spline for drive. I will weld the CV to the axle just so that it does not seperate. At the back, I am going to weld the axle to a plate which bolts to the transfer. All the rest is pretty standard Rock rig stuff with sliding RHS for the shaft and spline with a standard hilux uni at the diff.

Im hoping that this will give me heaps more angle out of the front shaft. Should be doing most of the work tonight as I am still hoping to make XRCC, so I should eb able to give an updayte on the build overnight, and the preformance after the weekend. May not work for you, but I thought it was a good idea

Main reason for the binding is because the rover front output is quite high compared to the hilux output. This means a fairly steep angle. I had leaves in the front then and on any flex, the uni would bind up as it was almost at its limit before there was any flex at all. Ive now put radius arms and coils in the front. Yet to try it out as It is little use till I get this shaft issue sorted.

You could still do what I am doing with a round shaft and a slip joint, and I imagine it would balance up okay if you did it right. I think it should be pretty strong too.

Cheers

Worked out really well. Ended up putting the CV in the opposite direction to the original idea. Anyway looks like about 70 degrees angle. If anyone knows the angle for a standard hilux CV, well thats what it is.

Would have also been easy to do with round pipe and a spline. Just cut up an old drive shaft.

Cheers

The weld would have to have weakened the birf, but its not gunna see anywhere near the shockloads. I dunno.... weird thats for sure.

Biggest question, what is the damn boot off?

Hey BJ
Dont know what the boot is off. I just went to a CV Joint and asked for a boot that would fit over 90mm CV. Anyway Dont know if the Boot will stay on since there is no groove or anything to hold it in place. Slides off pretty easy.

They are deffianatly different. I have been through this before. The IFS one can handle about half the angle.

How is the cut off piece of Axle held into the CV?

What Temp was the CV at when you welded it?

Axle is held by circlip and a weld. The CV was preheated with OXY for a bit before welding.
