a minimum of 11"? shit bit of over kill isnt it when 12.5" wide tyres are run on 8" wide rims

usually rim width is about 2/3-3/4 of tyre width, so about 9-10" would be good. any more than this and you are going to lose beads and tear sidewalls. Too wide a rim will also pinch the sidewalls as the tyre compressses (ie rolling over a log placed across the track) through not having "room to move" (ie an effective 2" radius with 9" rims, to 1" radius with 11" rims)

That's bull eh, I would prefer to run them on 9" rims. 11" is silly IMHO.

I'd go a 17x9 aswell.

This is a 40x13.50-17 Trepador on 17x9 (thanks to micka1 ;) ):

If you are planning to do an external beadlock on the 17x9 it'll bring it out to a 17x9.5 anyway. Go too wide on the rim and you'll find that you'll be bashing the rims a lot.

I'd say they've left a bit out when they've done the rim widths. Most manufacturers would put a range in there. Mickey Thompson suggest:
9-11 for a 13.50" wide tyre
8-10 for a 12.50" wide tyre
10-13 for a 15.50" wide tyre
Looks like the maxxis site has only put in the wider suggested rim size.

Cheers,
Ryano
