Noisy 60 series

Post by Insano »

First post here so hi to everyone.
A couple of weeks ago my 60 series started to make a tapping sound when ever i would take load on or off. Took it to a mechanic and was told it was driveline slap due to its age. It seems odd to me as it has happened very suddenly. I hate noises while i'm driving and would appreciate some advice as to how to diagnose the problem so i can fix it. Checked the Uni Joint near the gearbox and it seems ok. Also, it sounds like this noise comes from that area.
2nd Question. Went out for a bit of a run on some local tracks last weekend. Used H4 and L4 at various stages. No noises other than the first problem i mentioned. Yesterday arvo, hit some other tracks, and am now getting a grinding type noise in 4WD. Sounds like its coming from the front. seems to be loudest when cornering.
Thanks in advance

grinding in 4x4 when cornering sounds like CV's are wornout or desperately need greasing.

with the tapping, take the rear drive shaft off and see what sort of backlash you have in the gearbox/transfer case and the diff.

Is your gearbox a 5 speed? could be the rear main shaft starting to wear out on the output splines, take the plate off (6 bolts in a star configuration in line with the gearbox is) and see how tight loose the output shaft rear nut is. when they come loose they let the output gear move around and it flogs the splines on the shaft out. There is an easy fix though, you can buy a new out put gear that has the spacer between it and the PTO gear built in, and has splines all the way along it. they are around 300 - 400 $.

feel free to message me if you need any further assistance.

Yep. The CV's needed a grease. Will drop the tail shaft this week and see where the play is. Thanks MB
