how is your winch earthed ??
id say there might be something wrong with the earthing, old mans warn had a problem with frying solenoids turns out some dumbass at arb had wired up a earth wire back to the winch frame and it dosnt gett a good connection there frying the solenoids

Well if this happens to all winches then I am in trouble cos I aint got any solinoids at all. I got a PTO.
Back topic. My dad doesnt really maintain his winch and it works fine for the last 3yrs (was on car before he brought it aswell).
I would be taking it back and say fix.

I used to sell both Warn and Superwinch .
They both had the same problems with the solenoids.Poorly sealed allowing moisture to enter and corrosion. This coupled with intermittant use caused continual problems.
One factory brochure I read said operate the winch after each trip to heat it up and dry out moisture.
There are several posts about putting the solenoids in a sealed plastic box to keep them dry.
