I'm not sure on the ccda specs but what about what makes you feel safe? I built mine out of 48.3x3.2 for my own peace of mind.

yeah but their requirements are 'minimum requirements' you can go above their requirements just no less then their requirements.

Last I checked 48.3x3.2 CDS was cheaper to purchase also (40nb pipe). 44.45 is 1 3/4" tube, an imperial size not normally stocked by steal merchants.

I have built all of my GU roll cages out of 48.3 seamless. Plenty strong and there is heaps of head room. I would contact your local steel merchants and find out what is available and also what size dye's you have to work with.

back stays must be minimum 44.5 x 2.6 CDW 350 mpa
have a look at the master drawing on the ccda website. (although it does contradict the rules on a few points which isnt helpull!

the 48.3 mentioned is not tube, ccda calls for tube to their specs. the 48.3 is 1.5"NB pipe. it has a seam and allthough it is a larger diameter and is available in a thicker wall thickness than the CCDA tube, it does not meet their specs. The seamless tube that CCDA call upon is a reliable and predictable structural member in the eyes of an engineer. i have seen some horible quality pipe that has come from china. where(to my knowlege) all the tube that comes in to australia in ccda sizes is from USA. GO THE TUBE

Sorry but you are wrong. The 48.3 tube/ pipe that I use and others is seamless and it does not have a seam in it. And I believe it comes from France. I will get some and take a photo of it if you like.

Cold Drawn Seamless. CDS pipe comes in the same sizes as normal ERW and CDW as it is pipe. 44.45 is 1 3/4 Outside Dia TUBE.

Tube is measured outside and pipe is a nominal bore size ( hence 40nb).

i don´t need photos as proof. the point i make is that CCDA call for 44.5 x 2.6 tube. I expect if you can get a seamless pipe of greater than 44.5x2.6 with a yield strength of greater than 350Mpa, you would be fine.
be carefull making a cage yourself out of seamless pipe, a CCDA scrutineer may not be satisfied simply taking your word for the fact that it is seamless, as on the outside, it appears exactly the same as biunnings bought water pipe. it might be worth making a phone call to a scrutineer first to confirm that they will be happy with your choice of material.
happy fabbing

Yes phone calls have been made (no problems) and no it does not come from bunnings. :? It is stronger than the 44.5 x 2.6 and it is high quility pipe and it is readily available from this side of town. Like said some of us like to over engineer our cages even if it is more weight. :)
