Has anyone got any thoughts, opinions or experience with the Hema Navigator GPS (either the old or new one).

Save yourself some big dollars and buy a PDA based gps from fleebay like this one

Buy the oziexplorer and oziexplorerCE software and then just buy the maps from hema or get the whole aust and topographgic maps dvd and presto you got a navigator for a whole lot less.

i've had mine on order for a while now... still waiting....
I ordered the old model when the price dropped but they stopped releasing them before I got one, so have to wait for the new model. it's supposed to be out in the first week of january, which sucks as I was hoping to have it for our xmas trip away.

apparently there was quite a bit of reliability issues with hardware on the old one. they have ditched the supplier and found someone new for the new model.

the fact that they have held off releasing the new model until AFTER xmas says a hell of a lot. they would have missed out on a heap of xmas sales. but they didn't try and rush it through, they are making sure its right. your sure to get a quality product from a company that runs their business in such a way.

I have one of the old ones and it does great sitting in a draw in my shed. too many issues with the programming.

I was in a map shop recently that sold them, the saleslady did her best to talk a dude out of buying one because they are expensive, and have limited maps available in some areas and werent good value in her opinion. The dude bought it anyway because he had read that it was the best

I have one and thinks it's pretty good value for money. Route66 sucks ass but the offroad still has me finding new things about it all the time

I finally got mine last thursday. used it off road on the weekend. seems very user friendly, I have no GPS experience and I was able to workout how to mark tracks and leave waypoints etc easily...

the route 66 I aslo found to be quite good. it got me where I wanted to go. although I have not used a tomtom or navman (decent onroad GPS) before so can't compare to the latest technology.

All I can say is it's simple, it works and works well. I was suprised with the amount of tracks and detail on the maps (majority of the tracks we drove at glasshouse mtns was on the map).

Can anyone with a Hema navigator advise what the display is like in the direct sun?

I know with my Garmin it's nearly impossible to see with sun glasses when in direct sun light.

When I eventually get round to wiring in and mounting my lilliput screen, i'm thinking i'll build a little surround around the screen to shelter it from the sun a tad.

The VMS with IGO is a better all round unit than the Hema, with route 66, there is no doubt about that.


Screen size, resolution, view in sunny conditions, use of a larger sd card, all things I have found when using all of them, is why I run the vms 500, though I still keep my Magellan XL as well, as Ive been so many places with it, all the waypoints are there.

Once you have your ozi reg key, it will read any digitised and calibrated map really.

I tend to only use memory map when not following any tracks, in the desert, and being able to move screen, put the curser in the corner to show bigger view, and touch the screen to get position, bearing from my position, and distance, but find it a bit limited otherwise.

Every trip I have at least 3 units running on the windscreen, up to 5 sometimes, to be able to compare them.

Are you sure you don't want to be a pilot...... That sounds more like a rooster pit than a 4wd cabin.

Might just dig this thread up again its nearly time to go spend a dickload on the ute again, and my past experience with the MAGELLAN Triton 400 was by far the most useless item i have ever bought!
Who else has one of these Navigators and what do you think?? Im after advice on the new model.
