Torsion bars

Post by Leprecaun »

Does anyone know what else you need when replacing Torsion bars with longer versions to increase ride height ? I am about to pick up the bars, but will I still need to correct castor angles :?:

If your new Torsion bars are longer they probably won't fit! That's not the way they work.

Adjusting the height with IFS is done by adjusting the angle of the control arm - this is done by adjusting the angle on the other end of the torsion bar - you should have been able to increase the height by adjusting the original bars.

Either way, once you have changed the ride height your front geometry will need to be checked, and almost certainly corrected - probably for camber. Don't know about the Terrano, but on a Paj it normally requires shims on (one  ) control arm, and often longer bolts.

DON'T go to a major tyre chain retailer to have this done - chances are they don't know how to do it properly. Spend a little more at a 4by suspension specialist.

Good luck,

Scott

Okies, I have already adjusted the bars on there to near maximum, I have left a little bit for bumpstops and the like. So in order to raise the front suspension I can only make a guess that the procedure will be the same. So having longer bars won't help but having longer bolts down at the rear which control that articulation will. The std bar allows upto 1" with a few tweaks about 1½" I'm tring to get about 3".. Yes before the others start I know this is not legal in QLD...

i raised the front end of my pathy 2.5"
i got tough dog bars put em in, cranked them up, had it realigned. tyre power had no problem realigning the wheels and they didnt mention anything bout shims. what socks your running? with the amount of lift i have and stock upper arms my toughdog foam cell shocks slightly rub on the inner radius of the arm  would love a set of arms from ac or calmini but stuff getting gear from the u.s.

let me know if you need more info, pathfinders/terranos are my specialty

I updated the suspension about a year ago to OME as the stock stuff was about to give way, so its runnign HD OME shocks, the boots are fine, they lifted it about 40mm. I'm aiming on getting 33" under. I can do the body lift, just need the blocks and bolts, but I need to suspension lift it properly. Read an article on the upgrade of torsion bars thats all and was trying to work out all the parts before I go pick them up.

foget longer bars it doesnt work that way (well new bars MIGHT be slightly longer, anyways) the long bolts that go through the ancor arms (in the cross member centre of the car) have nothing to do with it either, you use the stock bolts

basically the only thing you need to do is put the new bar in and crank her up, obviously new shock as well

if your planning on 33 's, 3" suspension lift and 3" body lift is a MINIMUM, even then you are gonna get minimal rubbage on full steering lock and suspnesion compression

ALSO if you are planning on running 33's plan to replace you centre link and idler arm and eventually your tie rods on a regualr basis. im sad to say pathfinder steering is not made for 33's, in the u.s. there is wicked aftermarket steering set up but is $540 US from calmini - add to that getting it here to oz

any other questions....

i run 2.5"sl and a 2" bl and 31 copper mudds and that combo rocks, will maybe go 32's later but not for a while

If you have run out of adjustment on your torsion bolts, you have the option of turning the torsions one or two splines to give more initial lift before you start cranking the bolts.Usually your limits are decided by your bumpstops. What about fitting ball-joint spacers between the top joints and the top arms, helps with camber,CV angle and allows more drop.
The next limiting factor may be your shocks

Ok I have fixed the tierods and idler arms, they won't move as there is a lump of steel holding them where they are supposed to be, even after taking it offroad and some hard playing, no bends what so ever. Running 31 BFG Muds, no BL and just under 2"SL.

Thanks for the info. I will modify the bumps a bit and then see how that goes followed by turing the splines.

Im ust pondering the idea of 33's... given that its tax time and all.. But first i gotta address those shiate torsion bars put in there back in 86 :P

Yes.. SAS would be nice.. but so would the $1500 to do it. ATM a set of rancho torsion bars are $535 to my door, are these any better or worse than OME or Tough Dog ones? or does it come down to best price i can get on the day.

Also id be doing prob a 50mm body lift, and bit of bumpstop bootyfab.
Cheers,
Dan.

dj i run tough dogs now & i love em

old man emu have only just started doing bars so i wouldnt go there, thats just my personal thoughts.

rancho's have a good reputation but i have never used em so i dont know

i would recomend the new ralph stuff from tough dog

$1500 for a sas, more like over double, well for a pathfinder anyway. ive long pondered the idea and longed after one. BUT i have a lack of money to chuck at it. and finding an axle that will work - drive being fed from the passenger side of the vehicle

Ralph shocks in a hilux  ? Its only rated at a max towing of 1,500kg braked! I was of the impression that the ralphs were designed for cruisers/patrols/defenders packed to capacity...
Cheers,
Dan.
