longer shocks than coil springs??

hey guys
i want to get new coils and shocks for my GQ shorty and also want to get the supirior super flex radius arms for it because that front end flex is awesome!! just wondering if you can have say a setup like 4" coils but with 6-7" shocks to get more travel??? or do yuo have to get tha same size shocks? thanks

Shocks need to be matched to the coils or the coils may drop out on full droop (unless you had some sort of retention system). Even with retainers, you may not get much out of it anyway because without the weight of the vehicle on the wheel that was drooping, you would have less traction on that side. Best to have shocks that match the lift.

PM shane at suspension stuff he'll know if it can be done. I think u'll need flexy coils... with 3" flexy coils you can run 4-5" longer shocks, also i would say coil retainers too. Don't need heaps of lift on shorty tho, very capable with 3" lift

I tried it mate, its not worth it, even botling the springs in , unless you have a 10inch cab lift it wont really be any benefit, especially if you springs are only 4 and shocks are 7,

My mate is running 4 inch coils with 7 inch shocks, with drop out cones and spring retainers, the back of his flexes out a lot more than mine and ive got the same spring lift...just normal length shocks...........

Hi Guys
We often sell 4" lift flexy coils with the superflex arms. You can set the shocks up a bit longer but 6-7" would be a stretch.
What you can do though is modify you shock towers. This is much easier if you have a body lift, otherwise you have to cut stuff. If you modify you shock towers then this is easy.
You might be thinking that you will just let the coil fall out. This can be done but remember for every 2 inches longer your shock is, it is also 1 inch longer on compression therefore you have to make your front bump stop longer and longer and in the end you end up with a rougher ride and a higher centre of gravity when flexed up.
In conclusion, you can get great gains by using Superflex arms and flexy coils with a bit longer shocks.
Or do some cutting. My vote is for cutting

Our slinky long travel kit uses 7-8"lift shocks with 3"lift coils and 50mm bump spacers with sway bar links extended, brake line extensions etc so you can use a 12"stroke shock with less lift, but the design of the coil stays captive, and wont come out.
[have used our slinky long travel coils with 14"rear shocks too]
Slimline drop boxes work well also, with good bushes, and dabatable over flex difference on spending extra on the superflex arms.

Hey Darren, so your running sway bars also. Obviously its not restricting your travel. How is that achievable? Are you extending the links that much so it doesnt? Do you use the sway bars to stop the coils from popping out? Cheers Loz.

while talking about the front, you bolt up your shocks with stock mounts with only a 50mm bump stop. What is the extended and compressed length of the shocks you are using?
Yes the rear is easy to get good gains but again without mods we have found that the longest you should go to on the rear with a 3" lift is 820mm extended. Any more then that and you are constantly hitting the bump stops giving a rough ride.

I suspect that the foam might be breaking up and getting caught in the valving. Only a theory though. My advice would be to change over to another shock. Call me. This could be free or cost more for an upgrade. If you hold off for a couple of months then we have some adjustable remote reservoir shocks coming out for a great price.

Set the sway bars up so you dont lose down or up travel, and they will hardly limit articulation on a family wagon, or tourer, a very light car they might be a bit more of a restriction.
Our coils are designed to have a very long free height with soft rate for part to close up at ride height, and keep the spring captive when drooped.
Front shox were 850mm 10" stroke and rears 1020mm with 14"stroke in that indoor pic.

Front was a 30mm bump spacer, we machined our own alloy housings and used 80 rubbers, [see below]
We used 850mm front shocks and 1020mm rears with 14"stroke, and 50mm bump spacer in the rear to keep the 37's hitting the tray. The GU used every bit of the 10"front stroke and 14"rear stroke with standard front and rear arms, but we did have to go to heavy duty panhard rod washers, as they were getting so much twist against them they would pop the panhard rod eye over the standard steel washer.
750mm rear shock 12"stroke with 3"lift and 50mm bump spacer should work well with the 1/3 up and 2/3 down travel rule, and the shock should be getting all 12"of stoke used with that. 830mm long being a bad ride you mean the 100mm bump stop spacer you have to run is what ruins the ride.....

We made up these stainless heavier panhard rod washer to stop the panhard rods coming off over the standard steel washer.
Sway bar links and top shock mount
Front alloy bump housings and 80 rubbers
Rear towers for 14"stroke shocks
slinky coil ride height on 35's
Our bottom pin adaptors we screw onto the shaft to go pin pin mouinting.
Welding the nissan part back together, [even though the whole spring tower was gussetted to the chassis previously and braced] well 35 Canning stock route.....

I run 3 inch springs with 4 inch shocks no problem. at full flex there is still tension on the spring so it wont pop out.
4 inch springs with 5 inch shocks would be fine, 6-7inch is pushing it without retainers and spring clamps.
