I towed my mates ski boat up near Echuca earlier in the week.

It was a warm day and i had plenty of time so i hat on around 80km/hr. All was going well with the temp gauge sitting under half and then all of a sudden it shot up (whilst slowing down at an intersection).
I pulled over popped the bonnet, put the hearter on full but the temp would not go down. I walked over the passenger side and saw coolent everywhere. I let it cool down and filled it up with the only water i had (1 litre) and then drove at around 60km/hr with heater on for the next 30km untill i reached a house. It took another litre and i drove on another 80km.

I ended up driving back home yesterday in 38 degree heat (no boat) with the air con on and sitting on 80km/hr for 3/4 of the trip and 100km towards the end. No overheating but it took 1.5 litres of water for the 300km trip.

It has a new nissan rad cap and new coolant. I cant see any water in oil and the overflow is filling up but i cant see any bubbles!!

Any ideas?

cheers

Ps: Head was changed at 100,000km ago by previous owner.

PSS: Driving at 80km/hr on the way up and towing a boat it used only 20l/100km which is as low as i have ever got.......but i have never driven that far that slow.

Sounds like a cracked head, or corroded timing cover. Don't stress.!

Just Add Chemiweld, or Bars Radiator Stop Leak, or Seal-Up and keep on trucking on.

Yep. Head or at least the head gasket. Just redo it. New heads are about $1100ish from Nissan if you shop around. There is only a later casting available which is what the efi's got too. It's thicker where they crack.

I think i'm going to try some seal up and see how long it lasts and build up or buy a complete engine in the mean time.

Cheers

It annoys me that it cracked without even overheating!!

With the 'complete engine', mate of mine has been through 4 "cheap complete engines" and all have been fuqt...
your better off to either buy a cheap shit engine, and rebuild it, or just lash out and get a new head - round $1300 new from nissan bare.

I bought Seal-Up today, followed the instructions and it seems to have worked. No rough idle on start up........The warmer days later on in the week will tell the truth.

If i buy a cheap engine i will probably rebuild it. I just cant have mine off the road. I might also look at putting a tb45 in if its worth it.
