hey all
Im looking to step up from my sierra to some form of rover and am looking for advice on which model may suit.
the budget inc mods up to 15-20k
requirements
must be close to as capable as the zook
prefer to seat 4 but this is not a major requirement
ability to seriously modify
will want lockers and gears
good parts availablity.
my thoughts so far way along the lines of a v8 rangie early 90's or early disco although some of the defenders look interesting as well
zook specs
twin locked
transfer gears
34 swampers
she's pretty capable but my kidneys are paying the price
any help would be great cheers andrew

My choice would be a Defender. (thats why I have one)
But if you are after a V8 and comfort I would go an update D1.
3.9l v8 and 24 spline axles.

88ish Rangie is the pick of rangies, rangies have more room than a disco 1. V8 on gas i suppose?
would want atleast a 3.9v8 if thats the case.
Lockers, your choices are Maxi drive, arb, jacmac, kam.
Axles are maxi drive, hytuff, jacmac, rovertracks.
Crown wheel and pinion are weak, aftermarktet kam ones are stronger. other choices are toy conversion (recommend this one), rear salsbury, or gq patrol/80 series cruiser combo.
Transcase is tough as nails, ZF auto's are good aswell.
Gearbox choices are ZF auto, LT95 4 spped manual (strong), LT77 5 speed manual (not so strong), R380 5 speed (stonger than 77)
can get 30% and 49% reduction trans gears for the LT230 trans case.
parts are easy to get.
oh and way more capable than a zook

.
ok so which is easier to mod the disco or rangie or are they both a standard base platform?
also is tdi or v8 a better option and in a rover atuo or manual?
who's got a good build thread to get idea's from?
sorry for the noob Q's rovers are new to me

RRC and D1 are the same platfrom.
RRC have more class then a d1

yeah agree RR has more class, and more room inside, larger cargo area, front and rear bars are easier to get. I have a D1 tdi, and a 93 RR, i find the ride and driver position in the RR better (i'm 6'4"). Plus the rear door on the D1 pi$$e$ me off, good when it works, but pain when it doesn't.
300tdi is gutless, but has great fuel economy, V8 is better but obviously economy not as good but gas is an option. Isuzu, good power and economy

The TDIs are easy and cheap to tune up to be as fast as the stock V8s...and you get to keep the great mileage at the same time.

For that I'd be looking at the Rangie.
The other advantage of the Rangie is that the CofG is lower than that of a Disco1 (and waaay lower than a zooks). There are also parts everywhere for Rover mods.
Me.... 3.9V8, ZF auto with LT230 transfer case. I wouldn't even consider the Tdi if its a play thing, they dont have the power or instant response that a V8 has. This is also the combo that many of the Rock crawlers run around here. There is a lot of RRC building experience out there, do a search on it.

forgot how short wheelbase those little fellas are
and with the wheelbase of a RRc or disco you wont be doing wheelies as often
sweetlittle drover? though
go the rangie, as said you'll find them for sale already with alot of the mods you want and save buckets!!
or you can buy my diffs - goes on either RRC or disco with upgraded axles, lockers, c.v's, etc

I've got some toy converted diffs for a Rangie that are twin locked with chromo axels and Longfield CVs. Bolt straight under and are HEAPS stronger than standard...and HEAPS stronger than the ones that def90 has for ransom..I mean for sale.
$5k and they're yours.

Hi ajsr,
all Range Rover and Discoverys are 100 inch wheel base.
There are some extra long Range Rovers. But there are rare.
Try to get a Range Rover with upgraded axles and diffs and a chev v8.
You save a lot of money and the weak parts of the 4x4 are gone.
Greetings
Chris
