hey,

just wondering what the purpose of the thermostat is. i think its a valve that opens at a certain temp to let water through the engine, for cooling right?

i dont have a thermostat in mine. the water temp doesnt go over the "c" for cold. it doesnt go very far at all. usually it should sit just below middle when warm, right?

i also found out today that darwin mechanics dont know shat! if you do go to one that knows, you might as well give them your car, seeing as they charge so much!!!

i have a carby 1600, that doesnt seem to have a high idle choke thingy for warming the engine up in the morning.

any advice/help?

Get one and fit it , you are not doing yourself any favours by not having one.

Your engine is designed to run most efficiently within a set temperature range. The thermostat stops the coolant from circulating through the system until the engine reaches its operating temperature. If you don't have one fitted you can increase the wear rate on your engine and increase fuel consumption and emissions. Fit one and your engine will warm up much better. In my carby Vit the temp sits around 1/3.

Mine has one but still barely ever gets over "c" it seems to be a vitara thing.... the radiator is way too good for the engine...

Which I suppose is better than all the overheating isssues that Sierras faced regularly.

the thermostat is designed to compensate for the radiator that is too good, it keeps the engine at a constant temp.

your thermostat doesn't last forever, i replace mine every three years or so.

Without a thermostat (or at least a restriction) the coolant wont be able to absorb enough heat because its flowing too quickly through the engine.

With the carby, give Darwin Carbies a ring. Was gunna cost bout $400 to get the old carby rebuilt (that was with me pulling it off & putting it back on!). Weber, adapter and the final tune will cost the same.

ok, so i do need a thermostat. solved, will buy one today.

another thing, i've done a search on vitara carbys and the like, but none really had this question.

what other carbys can i use? what about twin carby set ups?

a mate has a datto 1600 twin weber carby set up?

i take it this set up works the same as a single carby only now one carby is feeding only two cylinders each?

will anything other than standard factory carby work as well?

if i'm going to spend the money on this, i think i might as well make it worth it?
