Radiator for baleno conv ?

G'day, as you know recently i put a baleno series 1 motor in my stockman, the setup i got used the original 1.3 radiator with the outlet on the top end tank moved to the passenger side. The cooling capacity is to small for this engine (about 4.5ltrs) it is fine idling but when you go over 80km/hr it gets hot, then if you slow down it cools down. It runs a draw thru thermo which is massive but i need a bigger radiator, with the bottom outlet on the drivers and top on the passenger side.
Any ideas, i can make anything fit but i just need the outlets on the right side.

Anyone else solved this problem?

cheers mick

A lot of us with the 1.6 conversion including myself run the standard sierra radiator with no problems. Sounds like something else is causing you issues.

The radiator seems in pretty good nick no damaged fins and the thermo cools it fine when stationary. I have 4.1 diffs and 6:5 reductions so she revs a bit on the high side. No room for a crank fan
I will go to the wreckers on tues and see if i can find anything suitable.

I've got 1 maruti stockman as well.
1.6GTI with 6.5 transfer gears revving to 7500.
I've had no issues running the factory 1.0 radiator and engine fan onroad.

I can watch the temp gauge on my aftermarket ecu fluctuate by no more than 2 degrees. It wanders between 69-71 as the thermostat opens.
On the sand or in the mud while using low range, where the vehicle is travelling slowly but high revving, the temp can begin to wander up to ~104.
For this reason I grabbed an all alloy radiator made to my spec from a chinese supplier (a mob off ebay who's quality seemed reasonable).
It's due for delivery in the next week or 2.
Might be an option for you to consider, but I'd be looking over your cooling system as a whole before I blamed the factory radiator for your woes. Countless numbers of sierra's have the same basic setup as you and run flawlessly with factory cooling. Why doesn't yours?

i had one of the alloy radiators of ebay and it was awsome in all conditions, but the outlet for the radiator is on the wrong side up top or i would have used that. I will get it flushed 2moro and see if that helps and check the thermostat.

saw you driving along malaga drv today (we were on reid hwy) =)

Brian has brand new 1.3 radiators from maruti - they have a thicker core than the aus sierra rads. Maybe have a chat to him about one of those?

with 6.5s and 4.1s you're still slower =) haha

maybe take measurements of the largest area you have and go to a wrecker to see what will fit??? I mean, youll have to modify or make new mounts, but youll need to do that anyway if you're going bigger.

out of curiosity - did u check the thermostat?

can you run the standard fan and shroud at all?
Ive a mate that runs a large thermo on his and it seems to cool worse than it did before the thermo
and mine is definatly cooler under the same conditions

actually i remembered something after ajsr suggested the shroud - do you still have that wind deflector plastic bit that goes below the radiator? Cos without that the airflow is stuffed and you get cooling issues.

If you don't mind spending some money, I just bought and fitted a 14" SPAL puller fan from PWR. And it is AMAZING ($250 it would fukin wanna be!!! )

If you hold a piece of paper out infront of the grill, it will suck it in from almost 300mm away!

As for the radiator, I fitted a 1.3 replacement alloy unit, and when testing the motor (1.6 16v) it actually struggled to get to running temp at idle. It took forever. Even after the thermostat had opened. So it is a very efficient core. Then the thermo is set to kick in at 90. It runs for 15 seconds then cuts out reducing water temp by 7 degrees.

Radiator was a LOWRANGE job $250US, so its cost me over $500 to keep this thing cool. But it works!!

the fan i have on there covers the entire core and draws alot of air through just as yours. I only have about 10mm between the back of the fan and the crank pulley so maybe i need to space it out a bit more.

I have only 5mm between fan motor and engine. I made a stainless shroud that mounts my fan VERY close to the core. I will get some pics.

Sorry about the pics. But the shroud REALLY helps.

that radiator looks awsome and cause it has alloy end tanks i could get the outlets swaped over but im impatient.

Ditto on the orig 1.3 rad.

Mines fine inc the orig 1.3 rad shroud, i also have the orig A/c thermo from the vitara mounted to the front if i need it.

i only have used it when sitting at redline or close in the boggy sand for ages.

I had it shipped with other parts, so no idea on exact cost. Probably around $30 USD....

It work quite well on the highway with the thermo turned off, and it is a single 40ish mm core, so its quite efficient.
