long time listener fist time caller here. im in the process of rebuilding my 92 single cab and cant decide wether to ditch the original tail shaft for a one piece as my centre bearing is flogged. everyone i know personally with lifted hilux's tend to get the same problem. at the moment it has a 2 inch lift, but i plan to run ifs rears with 200mm shackles and / \ shocks with ruf and x-over to come later. i dont really want any more height, just good flex. so if anyone can give me the pros and cons of either it would be most appreciated..
cheers mick

2inch lift wont call for a 1 piece shaft, i have a 2 piece shaft and don't see any cons so long as the truck has not got alot of lift, which mine doesn't. To much lift and the back piece of the shaft has to much angle causing the uni's to bind up.
Mine also has ifs rears and the shaft does not fall out of the joint.
You'll find the centre bearing is most likely flogged as it has been in the truck for years and is simply worn out.
There must be cons seen as alot of people go for the 1 piece, but im yet to run into any, it's been in its current form for 2 years, and i havn't worn a centre bearing out.

ive heard than injecting silicon into the rubber surround that holds the center bearing helps majorly with life span on centerbearings. this is the bit which usually fails rather than the actual bearing.
it has holes already you just sqeeze it in. before fitting.
i havent dont it though - i have a 1 piece.

I've got a two piece tail shaft and about a 3" lift, don't have any problems with mine. X2 with thehanko about the silicon, i've heard that too

X3 about the silicon, I did a search on here recently about centre bearings on the 2 piece shafts, I found that alot of people agree that injecting silicon adhesive into the 3 holes in the new centre bearing will keep the rubber around the bearing good for alot longer.
I went to bunnings and bought a tube of "sikaflex 291, marine adhesive sealant". I injected it into the 3 holes in the rubber, left it for a few days to cure, then installed it to my hilux.
I hope that answers your question.

Hey its a good idea to stick with the 2 piece as a single hangs low and you will end up hitting it on rock and things, at least you can get home on a flogged out centre bearing a bent shaft is alot worse.
just my 2c

I agree unless of course youve got to much lift for the 2 piece to handle the angle change.

thanks guys. i end up buying a centre bearing and 3 uni's as well, as the middle uni was quite notchy feeling(read fuct)so idecided to do the lot while im under there and all for under 200 bucks. repco quoted me 270 for the c/b and 52 for each uni, which is more than i could have got a mate to make me a one peice. fingers crossed it holds together...
