Too many problems to mention in just one thread but boy the ride is nice. I have searched the problems several times before and my research scares me off purchasing each time.

All the best though, I would still consider purchasing one myself in the future, I just won't research first and be more spontaneous. ;)

As said, they are a very nice ride. I instantly wanted one the first time I drove one, the 4.6 has plenty of power and with the airbags suspension you ride on air...literally.
I see the P38a as sort of a test bunny that LR had to buld in order to make the great cars they make today...D3 and the likes. The first with allround air suspension and many other things. For starters it is littered with electronics, it has an ecu for everything...even the transfer case has one, and most of them are 'nicely' tucked away under the front seats.... so best not get stuck in any deep water holes. Do the research, the 4.6 is known for cylinder liners failing which means new engine and $12k later. The did fix this later, and also went to the Bosch injection system which proved much better than the Lucas system. Also heard that the brake accumulators are known to fail as well, but the big thing is the air suspension. If a bag fails, the car goes into limp mode, where you are on the bump stops limited to 40km/h.
Just a few things about them...theres heaps more on AULRO.

Cheers
Hendrik

The situation is actually nowhere near as negative as that. I've posted answers to this same question before; there are a few people who own them and love them. You will notice that 99% of the negative comments about them are (a) from people who don't own them and (b) are saying the same things that people say about all Landrovers... lucas electronics suck etc.

Well, there are a few things not to like about them but the air suspension isn't one of them...it's great and there is nothing difficult about maintaining or repairing it at all. The P38 is probably a bit of an enthusiast's car as you need to get your head around some new basics. As a way to get a $130,000 car for $10,000 they are pretty good imho :)

The 4.6 had liner issues, if you find one with a blown motor don't buy it as the motor is blown, if you find one with a good motor then the motor is probably good given that it hasn't dropped liners in the 10+ years since it was built. I got my HSE, on gas, for under $8k. It is honestly the best car purchase I've ever made. If I'd known how much I would like it, I'd have spent 12-15k instead and gotten a tidier one, mine is not cosmetically the best. I've had it a year, I have not had any issues at all that I wouldn't expect with any 2nd hand car... less issues in fact.
