1HD-FTE hot starting issues

Can anyone help me with this, my mate is travelling through africa atm in a turbo diesel 100 and having the issues below?
Have a bit of a developing issue. Before we left on the trip I stopped to get fuel one time and it would not start after – it would turn over normally but wouldn’t fire up. Eventually after 15min or so of cranking on and off it came to life. That happened again a few days ago and again took about 10min of trying to get going. The next day, it kind of happened once – it started first time but took about 5 sec of cranking.
It seems to be always when the engine is starting hot. Apparently the 1HD-FTE fuel pump does not have a simple fuel cut solenoid (as per 1HZ and 1HD-FT) so it can’t be that getting stuck. A bystander who heard it crank and then finally start yesterday thought that there must be air getting into the system somewhere – however the little primer pump was tight and therefore prob not that? I read in the Toyota manual that the fuel pump richens the mixture to aid starting – maybe that isn’t working properly and its more noticeable when hot?? Don’t think it has glow plugs anymore so cant be those.
When running is going well (plenty of power, normal fuel consumption, not using oil etc) so its defo something only starting related.
Thanks
Chris
