what would you buy, a stock 1 owner 4b and do the mods yourself over time, or for similar money buy a modified rig which has double the k's and has seen a fair bit of bush work

That way,you know what you have and what it's done.
Spend your money doing up your car instead of fixing breakages from what the previous owner did.

Personally I'd buy the stock rig.....
Its reliable and untouched and all future work you do to it you will know exactly all the who,how,why & what's that will go into it.
Unlike the moded rig which you know nothing of as to the mods !

leaves room for personal tweaking...
things like lockers probibally not the first thing you'd get and not something that is unique to you, so a rig with lockers for eg would not take the fun out of it at all...

Actually, yeah. What I said was based on an everything-else-being-equal proposition. Obviously if there's some gear on a rig that makes it a really, really good buy, then you might as well grab it.

Depends how important cash is to you. A heavily modded fourby can often decrease in value. Buying a neat stock one can be more expensive and then you have to buy the mods on top of that.

i went for a stock rig in excellent conditition from a car yard, got rorted big time, things a bit of a lemon... now spending money fixing it up to standard, then have to spend more to modify. either way you can get screwed.... go the mod rig, prob much cheaper in the long run. or it was prob just me

first time was to get it registered. the other 2 were for making it bigger and better.
it takes time and money to build a modded 4by.
it only takes money to buy a modded 4by.
depends what you want it for. if you have plans to change the engine/trans/diffs high kms wont really matter. just need a good body/chassis.

If I had to do over again I would not buy the clean stocker. I spent to much on it. Wish I spent less on some thing not as flash. And then maybe spent the rest on tryes and suspension if it did not already come with good gear. I think I have spent double of what I really should have. Would have made a difference finding this site two years ago.

Buying a modded rig is good if ur really mech minded and have played with that sort of stuff before so u can easy fix/change things.
If y buy a stocker u can learn as u go and get exactly wat u want out of it in the end.

we always talk about this at work, i personally would by a modded rig that has had the shit flogged out of it. WHY? shit that brakes is always replaced. look at how many t-case Bj has broken, this means that there is always new gear oil in there as opposed to grandad who does it every 200,000. Cheezys motor is mega bucks so he does all he can to maintain it, grandads diesel check light comes on and 30,000 later he changes the oil and belt. Always up grading lockers and gears means new axles and seals. Yes it maybe flogged but i doubt that any part would be more than 12 months old. yes you may need to replace a gear box at 1000 dollars but it far better than buying 2 lockers at 2500.

I spose if you are just starting out it is a good idea to buy a stocker and start from there. Probably would have killed myself by now if I bought a modified first now that I think about it.

thats a good point and is an excellent idea if u know wat u r doing.
If it is your first rig or u are not any good at car mechanics then a standard one to learn on would probably be a better option.

After 4 years and god knows how much cash (I do know but would cop a bagging if I told you ) I would hate to start from scrach again but I did enjoy the ride to get where I am now. I think if it's your first real 4wd go the stock or near stock. but if you have been playing around with another moded 4X4 you don't need me to tell you what is and is not a good deal.

Mine was stock when i bought it, and quite possibily would do it again. What alot of people also miss by buying a modified rig first off is the ability to drive. The MQ spent 12 months as stock as a rock with 31's. After that i went 33's and a 2" suspension for another year... until it was wearing 35's, locker, body lift, shackle extentions, removal of leaves to soften the pack, etc. a few years after again. Sure the main reasonbehind why it took so long to do the mods was $$$ or lack there of ...the point being because i learnt the charastics of the vehicle before it was kitted out, if something ever went wrong i.e. compressor not working, etc. the rig was still driviable because i wasn't reliant of these mods. And the other advantage is i know the limitations of the truck alot better!
