Plugging in a 1HD-FTE

G'day all...

I was wondering if there is anything that can only be done by Toyota, that my local mechos couldn't do? I am not much of a mechanic, but i understand that Diesels these days can auto tune when plugged into a computer. If it is being serviced by a private workshop, would they be likely to have a computer that would do this, or is Toyota the only place to go for it?

It is an 04 Sahara, 1HD-FTE donk.

Id go to the workshop who knows how to look after landcruisers
the computer for Toyota will only do things like check for codes, code keys and help with diagnostic procedures. not so much tuning the engine.

Coming from dealerships i've seen a lot of landcruisers come from small workshops that don't specialize in 4wds and they've dodgied up something fierce.
for example. wheel bearing nuts undone and done up chisel etc. simple job like repacking bearings turns into a full replacement of the stub axle assembly because they haven't done it properly.

So, if the workshop is competent, then they can do everything Toyota can do?

Are you shore?

I booked my 80 series in with toyota last week to have my aircon serviced as it wasn't get as cold as it used to.
I waited for it while it was being looked at 1 hour later sorry we cant find any thing wrong with your aircon. But we did find the heater control was not closing properly and adjusted it. NO CHARGE!

These motors are pretty expencive to replace just pay what toyota ask and you wont go wrong.

if there competent then yes they will be able to do all things mechanical that Toyota can do.
When it comes to diagnostics and talking to the computer it depend on how good the small workshops scan tool is.

Another thing to remember about Toyota is they also have the backup of the engineers to ask for information about the car is they cant find the reason for fault.

a 1hd-fte is not a high tech motor. the pump is still a basic ve distributive pump and anyone with diesel injection experience can fix it. I'd take it to a reputable diesel shop for serivce or repair

As for the rest of it a landcruiser is nothing special. any shop can work on it, but like any make or model you just have to find a good mechanic to begin with. Experience helps, but any mech with a workshop manual for it can do the job properly.

Not all toyota dealerships are hopeless there are good ones and there are bad ones just like any workshop
