99 TF Rodeo Questions - getting it all right?

Hi guys,

Im in the makret for a new car currently and am looking to purchase my old man's TF rodeo, its a 99 model dual cab style side with a 2.8 TD in it

I havnt had an IFS 4wd before so its going to be a bit of a step back from my old 80, but the fuel economy of the 80 just blew my mind, and talk about expenses!

Sorry for all the questions, im just trying to get all this info together for when the time comes. Im just after a few main questions, ive done some searching but cant seem to put it all together. so this thread should help me and others

Lift and tyres. 2" Body lift + a 2" suspension

BL is easy to do so that should be pretty standard, read the guides about radiator, shroud, gearsticks, brake lines etc

With the suspension is it best to go with extended shackles or go for full leaf setup? And just wind the front up or buy seperate torsion bars allready reset?

Im planning to run 32" or maybe even 33" (depends on the fuel economy of 33's, i may have to get some different gearing?) scrubbing is a little bit of a worry, i dont mind hitting firewall but i dont really want to cut guards

engine

As i mentioned it has the 2.8 TD in it, 5 speed manual. It is completly stock, 180K on it and serviced every 10000K since new, whats the best options for power and is it at a safe age to tune slightly?

2.5 or 3" exhaust (3" sounds kind of large, my 4.2 cruiser had a 3" straight through, so is 2.5 the go?)

Jackaroo intercooler bolts on (if you chagne the turbo housing around) Is this hard to do or as simple as a few bolts? Is the performance increase good or should i go with a custom top mount job?

Boost and fuel: Not sure on what the stock settings are, but im not really a fan of changing these myself so i think ill just get it dyno'd by a pro

Im going to be putting in a few guages to keep an eye on things (that i puit in every car) Oil Pressure, boost and pyro. What exhaust temps should i expect from a mild tuned 2.8l?

Currently the car is getting around 560km to a tank as my old man calls it, which is like 46 litres or so (from quarter to full, never runs it below quarter) is this about right or good? can i expect much drop with above mods + 32's or 33's ?

Other

Only other things im planning is of course basic stuff, UHF, dual batts, snorkel etc. I am looking throw a locker or two in it for offroad, but it is mainly going to be used for camping trips with the family (im not into breaking stuff anymore, might buy another gq one day to do that)

Any comments or suggestions as for must-have mods would be great

sorry again for all the questions
cheers
John

Hi,
I bought my old mans 98 TD Rodeo,
is a great ute :-)

mine gets about 9L/100km with 30" AT's so your economy is good, but im on the highway a lot so is a bit higher than normal.

With the suspension i am looking into a 2" suspension and a 2" body then run 32's this seems to be the way to go.

As for the boost and fuel, i have fitted a boost controller and gauge, going to wind up the fuel when the exhaust is done, make sure you get an EGT gauge before you do this to keep an eye on ur temps

The 3" dump pipe and exhaust is a good idea, but i havent found anyone yet that is willing to make the dump pipe, they all say ti is 'too hard'
but if you are planning on running 12-15 PSI boost and having it intercooled and winding the fuel up the 3" is definately better than the 2.

Make sure you change the oil every 5000 and filter every 10, i change my oil and filter every 5000, apparently these engines will last forever if they are regualrly serviced.

you should jump on www.clubisuzu.com aswell to get some more ideas

Hope this helps

Geoff

Thanks for the reply, was down the street today and actually seen one with some 32" muddies on it on offset rims, i think 32's might eb the way now too, even they looked pretty big under it :)

Few people have been saying tis hard to fit a 3" dump pipe on the 2.8l, so not sure how im going to go with that, but ill have a chat with some exhaust shops to get it sorted.

Picking the car up in Feb so looking forward to spending some cash on it, tyres + exhasut, tune, snorkel etc is first

I am currently in the process of fitting a cooler to mine and the thing that is stopping me from top mounting it is the turbo housing. If yours is the same as mine there is a tag that the wastegate actuator bolts on to. This tag is what is stopping mine from rotating because the linkage that is connected to the actuator will be affected by the rotation. The earlier Rodeo`s had a different housing and that is why they were able to do a simple housing rotation. I`m going to front mount mine and run some plumbing to it rather than fiddle around having to change the blower housing and chop holes in the bonnet.

The 2.5 inch exhaust will be ample. Invest in a snorkel if you don`t already have one, fit a dump pipe, tweak your injector pump and you will have power to burn.

Fuel economy should be between 9-10 L/100.

guerd87,

Do a search on my name and you will find a few of us that have done the 2" lift and the 33" tyres.

Cannot do the 33" without a guard cut, but, would I do it again, bloody oath. Love the 33's. With the 2" lift and the Landcruiser off set I do not scrub at all.

Re the fuel economy. I actully get better economy out of ny 33" than my 31". I have a speedo calibrator in the cabin that I switch over between tyres so I know the speedo is correct. The 33" make the take off substantially slower, but once on the plane they are awsome. To saty legal I go back to the 31' when needed.

From an exhaust perspective, don't wast the extra money on the 3" . The 2.5" is suffice and, as I have stated in a previous port today, if Beaudesert are still about, give them a call.

Turbo pressure. Standard without the intercooler I get 9.5 pounds max. Not that you would know as the 4jB1T is a guttless SOB but very tourqy. I would go with the Intercooler but if you do so I would definitely go with the Pyro guage. Oil pressure I think is a must and the only reason I have a boost guage is to know that my turbo still works. As I said above, one would not know without a guage to tell you.

The standard rodeo comes with a 63 (i think litre tank). If you are geting 560Km to the tank, you are doing well. I get on a trip without towing around the 9.5l/100Km. I use the 500Km mark as the time to refill. If after 560K you are still above quarter, sure you do not have an extended tank?).

I have the TJM bull bar, steel sliders and the 33" rubber and I have hit on the locak weigh bridge around the 2.3 Tonne mark. The tyres weight heaps.

Also have a look at some of my posts and I have photos of the dual battery setup to fit in a 100Ah battery. To fit one in the power steering resivour needs to be moved a bit. If you cannot find the forum, drop me a line and I will take some new photos and send them through. Snorkel is a must and a rear locker is worth every cent. The snokel by the way really helped with my low end touque. I was blown away how much my diesel likes colder air.

Cheers

Rainsey

Only in the MUs and Bighorns, all Rodeos are gear driven timing and also the 2.8 Jackaroos.
