does anyone know if it's possible to fit a p38 4 pin diff into a disco 1 axle case? it's a good upgrade from the standard sick 2 pin diff.

Although they are 4 pinion diff, they are still a weak diff.

You will be better off with a locker or tru-trac to overcome the 2 pinion weakness.

Better still for stronger ring an pinion, and stronger axles, etc. do a toy diff conversion into your disco housing.

If you are bent on making the P38 diff fit, you will need to open up the big hole in the housing a little but all the way around - about 2mm as a guess. I think the bolt pattern was the same from what I recall. You will also need to grind open the slot so the crown wheel will pass through. That IIRC is about a 5mm grind to the inside side of the slot.

thnx for the replies guys,i contacted ashcroft transmissions to get a price for the factory 4pin diff and at 545 sterlings is not much cheaper than a quaife atb centre diff at 575 sterlings a well proven brand!!
but on the other hand you can get a tracktech (detroit)tru-trac diff plus a 4.11 ring&pinion at 535 sterlings.

where would you choose to invest your money?

Of your selection I would expect the Quaife to be the best of them. It has greater biasing than the TT.

Factory 4 pin and P38 would be last choice as they do nothing for traction and only overcome the 2 pinion weakness.

Tru-trac and Quaife are similar, with the Quaife having better biasing. Both overcome the main weakness in the stock diff. If you have traction control, either will be a very good choice.

If you upgrade the axles and cv's the ring and pinion then become the weak link in the drive train.

What is the Quaife biasing vs. the Truetrac's? Does Quaife ruun a different ratio F vs R ?
