yep the GU ute and wagon are the same as eachother except for the obvious body mounts etc.. but they are slightly different to the GQ as in they have "crush cans" on the front which i belive are to actuate the air bags in te GU's

Except for the rear, the length is different at the rear member (towbars are not interchangeable) and the engine mounts vary depending on what engine was in it. There are about 25 chassis's listed for GU according to Nissan. The front can vary depending on the radiator fitted also.
The chassis exhaust mounts vary too.

2.8 had different engine mount locations and a different trans x-member.
4.8 had different front to accomodate long skinny radiator. TD 42 and TB45 had wide radiator. I've seen the 3.0L with either depending on wagon or ute.

GU wagon towbars do bolt straight up to a GU ute.

This is a Hi-jack but revelent.

I have a 4.2 GU coil ute but I soon need a wagon. I want a 4.2 GU but they are a bit thin on the ground and pricey so the questions.

Can I swap a wagon body onto my ute chassis?
If so can I legally register it in QLD?
Would it be easier/cheaper to swap my engine/trans into a wagon?

Cheers Matt

I know they fit because i have a GU wagon and ute and swapped the towbar off the wagon on to the ute when I put a Kaymar on the wagon!! ;)

from memory, GU coilcab tow bar is the same as GQ. As the rear of the chassis is the same from GQ to all GU I would assume the towbar from a GU ute may not fit a wagon because it will interfere with the bumperettes.

the only difference on the rear of the chassis is when you go from a coil rear end to a leaf rear end. Both wagon and Ute coil rear end chassis are identical (other than small brackets etc..) A leaf sprung chassis is longer to allow the rear shackle to be further back allowing the front hanger of the rear spring to be in the correct position. Leaf sprung utes have a slightly longer wheelbase i think too (bugger all though). The towbar from a coily wont go on a leafy.

Not the one we bought 2 weeks ago. As the wagon has a larger tow capacity we ordered a wagon towbar to fit to a ute thinking the same thing that they were the same, this was a brand new ute. It didnt fit, perhaps in another brand it might but not this one. This was a coil cab ute.

My Wagon is 2002 model and the ute is a 2004 coil cab using a genuine nissan towbar.

According to the Carasell towbar book at my work. the GU Coil cab ute and the GU Wagon are the same towbar model numbers, the Ute and Coil Cab are identical chassis apart from different mounts for the tray vs. rest of the wagon.

Have a look at the back of a Coil cab chassis, you can bolt the bumperetts from GQ/GU Patrols to them they have the bolt holes and the captive nuts right at the end.
