Build It Out Of RHS, Or SHS Steel Because Pipe's Hollow... Therefore, More Easier To Bend.. And The RHS And SHS Has Four Walls, Allows More Reinforcement To Strengthen It... Just A Suggestion

Can a Pipe be Square
can that post ^^^ make less sense??
RHS = Rectangular Hollow Section
SHS= Square Hollow Section
Build it out of whatever you like the look of and reinforce as neccessary.
I have seen a couple of trays made with cattle yard rail for the sides which I reckon looks good.

Hey mate i built a tray for my 45ser used 2 75x50 RHS main rails with 75mm Preformed channel and 10mm plate for the mounts it was fairly simple then made the outside frame from 65x30 rhs and 40x40 shs acroos for the floor to mount onto. I will get some photos up soon as it stops raining and i can get to the ute. I built a Tube tray for a mates GU it was alot of work notching the pipe and get the bends the same from side to side i turned out real good suited him but useless for carring anything really.

MANCRUISER wrote:Nope... RHS and SHS Is The Go Mate... Tube is Pipe..
no actually it's not. different standards of measurement for a start.
and what's wrong with tube anyway? if Rhs and SHS was so much stronger, why is it manditory to make rollcages out of tube??? why are buggies built out of tube?
and if the problem is that tube is "hollow" WTF does the H in RHS and SHS stand for? and why isn't that a problem?

the diff is tube will dend and bend with a hard enough hit, rhs will do the same but will stand up to it better.. ( think having to bend 4 edges (corners) as aposed to none, have you ever tried to bend a box?? not to say it can't be done but take more force, but by the sounds mate this is gunna be a driver, don't sound like you will be chasing mountain goast mt everst so either would do.
im building (slowley) a 45, due to cash flow and having time, i built it out of my old tray, i cut the sides level with the floor of the tray and moved it to sit on the floor of the tray and weld'd it on, and used the cut off for the back of the tray, it's not finished but ill post some pics, all it cost was welding wire and cutting disc's, ( hard to explain but it's make sense when i post pic's

wrong.
Rollcages are specified to be made out of round tube for a reason... that reason is round tube is stronger than the same wall thickness RHS or SHS. a cylinder is the strongest overall shape. your RHS 100 x 50 x 3mm might be stronger than tube on the corner (dunno myself), but cop a hit to the middle of the 100mm face, it will bend and dent easily. almost as easily as a piece of 3mm flat stock...

he is asking about a try, not a rollcage. Just use SHS or RHS. It will be fine. Otherwise keep your eyes open and buy a secondhand tray. They sometimes come up for a decent price.
