jake check your radiator cap it might not be allowing the fuild back in when cold as it should. i had the smae problem this fixed it. also check for air in you cooling system. is your turbo water cooled if so do the hoses to run higher than the engine or your radiator cap. mine do and i also had to remove a hose fill up the cooling system till coolant came out and then put it back on why its was still come out. to get the water above the hose use a coke bottle teh bottom cut out with tape around the neck and fit to your filler fill this with coolant that should help get any air out of the cooling system

jake I used to have the same trouble with my turbo bundera (factory turbo), I could never figure it out, and sometimes it would go months without doing it. I think it was related to the water cooled turbo and coolant boiling in the turbo, and the pressure not dropping enough when the motor cooled down to suck coolant back in. but I never erally figured it out. if you have a toyota radiator cap throw it away, they are crap and never hold their rated pressure. they cheapo aftermarket ones are better. also if you have a body lift or any parts of the cooling system higher than the rad cap then you get bubbles trapped and the bubbles just grow and grow, forcing liquid coolant out the cap instead of vapour.

the only problem fellas is that my turbo is only oil cooled

yeah bundy was the same. mustn't be the turbo boiling the water since your turbo is oil only.
have you had an EGT gauge on it? maybe combustion temps are too high and it's flashing the coolant in the head? maybe minor head gasket problem blowing a little bit of combustion gases into the coolant? (easy and cheap to test with a carbon dioxide tester bulb thingo)
has it always done this trick, or did it start happening recently?

id have to say its only started doin it after the turbo got put on....GULP
whats a EGT gauge?
wood a radiator specialist be able to do the carbon monoxide test (little bulb thingy)?

Exhaust Gas Temperature. essential turbo diesel tuning tool. no turbo should be installed on a diesel without using one. did a shop install it or did you do it yourself? injectors in good shape? does it smoke?
radiator should might have the tool. any mechanic should. any diesel shop will have an EGT.

ok got ya now no my old man and me put the turbo on.... never used an EGT......dam will get that done asap first thing next week..
so the worst it cood be is a cracked head...hope it fawkin aint and the least it coo be is a cavatating problem....

injectors are good...and only smokes now cos of the fuel has been wound up abit to compensate for the turbo boost....... smoke is black and not grey or white

jake if it has pressure in the hose after it has cooled down like the next day check your rad cap sounds like its not working holding pressure to well it should allow coolant to flow back when it cools.where is your rad on the front of the motor or on the radiator. also check that a radiato hose to soft and colapseing in when it cools down.

check all your hose clamps are tight, sometimes a connection won't leak under pressure but will let air back in when cooling down, hence the full bottle. are there bubbles coming out of the filler neck when the engine is running and warm?

already been over the hose clamps and have checked them all...and all is good... no bubles coming up the filler neck when runnin or warm

it doesnt sound like the radiator cap correct me if im wrong but if the cap wasnt letting water back in when it cooled wouldnt it colapse the radiator hose

Hey lads. I'm an occassional lurker here but thought I'd better add my 2 cents on this one. I'm no mechanic, so I'll just tell the story :-
I've got an '89 2.4TD Bundy & just went thru a full engine rebuild (oh joy!)
After approx. 1000km & my 1st trip on the freeway I was having exactly the same problem.
My mechanics (who installed the engine) suggested straight away what the problem was, but I was at the mercy of the engine builder re- warranty. After 4 months & several bus trips across Sydney I had tried the following :-
* Cooling system passed pressure test.
- Radiator removed & inspected for blockages.
- Tried 3 radiator caps (i.e. - the cap is not tested during the pressure test... TIP - leave cap on & put the tester on a heater hose!)
- All hoses replaced (looking for internal hose collapses)
- Thermostat housing replaced.
* Engine combustion leakage test (TK test?) passed.
At this stage, the engine builder is saying , if anything, it's the cooling system, as they can't see any problem (only shows up after 100-200km). I taped a bottle to the over-flow pipe on the reservoir, hit the highway & drove straight back to the workshop (with the bottle now full of coolant!).
They finally agreed to take the head off ----> CRACKED HEAD (i.e. - pin-hole crack, which is why it passed the combustion leakage test).
My mechanics said this was the problem all along, as they have seen it a number of times before.
I certainly hope this isn't the problem for you, but at least it gives you an idea of what I had to do to isolate the fault.
Scott.
P.S. - She's cranking now & will get an inter-cooler as soon as the warranty's up!!!

i gotta go to a radiator joint
