Outer Limits 4x4 Board

hi there,have recently purchased a smashed up lux with twin ARBs etc and am about to hook it all up in my dual cab.My question is where have you blokes ran your compressor??

in the 22r powered one i bought it is over in far corner near power steer but wont fit in my 2.8 diesel there.The winch power box was under the bonnet next to fuse panel and was hoping to run it there again but i am thinking compressor will have to go there.

If anyone has ideas or pics that would be great,thankyou.

very simple haha did think about running it behind the back seats as ive seen a few there but how do they go for noise?does it get to you and make ya go nuts?

dunno yet, in my old car (22R) i had it top right of the engine bay.

The new lux i havnt really used it, but its got a V8 that drowns out any other noises

Has it got rubber mounts???

U could use those rubber blocks with the thread on each end, that would probly dull the noise down somewhat

Its not like it was silent mounted in the engine bay anyway man.

yeh just thinking will be pretty bad in there.Might plug it in and see what i think.If not have a plan of moving power steer res,then it might fit over there and ill still get winch box where it was in my single cab.

I mounted mine under the driver seat in my 80. The LSX90 that works it's way up the hose and out the vent is doing a great job of rust-proofing the floor under there!

keep it in engine bay mines mounted next to fuse box on drivers side, stuff having compressor in cab when its running the noise would piss me off lol

ARB Mounted mine just behind the Passenger side headlight, sitting it up on it's end on a special bracket they have. But that's for 2005 78 Series Troop Carrier.
I was a tad worried about picking up water if it was running while going through a river or something like that, they extended the intake up to the rear of the Motor - I still did not like that so I relocated it to inside of the Air Box just before the Air Filter, if water gets in then no compressor is the least of my worries!

i don't like them in engine bays. your meant to keep them cool not cook em !
noise in cab is bugger all, for locker use you don't run them a whole lot and when your pumping tires your not in the cab anyway.

One under front passenger seat and one under bonnet.

Under the bonnet is not so bad, I guess it depends on the type of 4x4 the Troop carriers seem to have a relatively cool bonnet, AGM batteries also don't like the heat yet people tell me they work fine in the 78 series yet put one under the bonnet of a Jeep and it will cook.
By running the intake inside of the Air Box also made it even quieter.

thanks for the ideas fellas.Am still working on mounting it under the bonnet,next to the fuse panel seems to be best option.Its on the same side as the exhaust if anyone thinks it will be too hot?

Behind the seats won't be bad.

1 : its not that loud.
2 : it only runs for 2 seconds..
3 : atleast its protected more from dust/water etc.

Mine is on the pass side on the inner guard against the firewall, you can move the p/s res more toward the front just enough to fit the comp in there, the res sits nice as if it was a stock position, just shorten the p/s lines as needed, there low pressure lines so cutting them is not a problem.

if you go behind the seats, and make sure you seal all the airlines/connectors properly, it wont run for bugger all turning your lockers off and on , plus, if you do what arb do, and run the pressure release from the air solenoid back out of the cab under the car, you wont get the oily smell either. also, yes the compressor is waterproof, but being behind the seat, your inline fuse, relay, and any connectors are also out of the heat/water/dust/mud
just my opinion, but in my cruiser its behind the seat, and when i need my lockers, the last thing i'm concerned about is the compressor noise for 5 secs, bit more worried about the track!

they make as much noise under the bonnet as being behind ur seat. imo

Berad:- thanks mate,i did look at that option while under there yesterday arvo.Would be a little tight for room still but definately an option.its one of the old style compressors.I like that corner for it being out of the way of most things and pretty well protected

If only running the Compressor for the lockers then behind the seat or inside the cab is possibly the option for you, if also pumping up the tyres it can get a bit noisy for the passengers.
I always leave the motor running when pumping up my tyres, with the bonnet open you can only just hear the pump running, partly due to the air intake being installed in the Air Box.

Wow that is possibly the first time I have seen that as a mounting option.
I hope the air intake has been relocated to somewhere above the water mark.

Also a bit of protection may be needed - but still a good position.

Just finished washing the sand and dirt out of my chaise rails after spending 5 days on Fraser Island, wow how much dirt, mud and sand can be stored up there! while cleaning I found a bit of drift wood stuck between the left hand leaf spring mount and the disk rotor cover, fortunately no damage to the tire, but it did make me think when you mentioned the pump being installed under the car, a few bash covers may be a good idea.

yeah, true. ive had them there for about two weeks but no serious off road-ing. used two M10 bolts through the rail holding them on a piece of 5mm angle and machined up a couple of bushes for support. they are a sealed unit so yet to see how well sealed they really are? intake was extended by way of an 8mm tube to the engine bay. i also made a light stone guard for the outside of the rail to stop stone being thrown from the front wheel.

if people desperately want them i can do photo's.

Will be interesting to see how they go but by the sound of it you have done a good job - top idea.

Totally agree

Got mine in the cab, best place for it. No one is in the car when airing up tyres so noise isn't an issue and when I fit a locker it only goes for a few seconds like people already said. I'd rather put up with the noise for a few seconds and keep the compressor clean and dry.

how much are you all paying for arb compressors?

no idea,it came with the rest of the car and lockers

Thanks fellas ended up going with the space next to fuse box,behind battery.Mainly as i didnt have to muck around shortening or extending wiring too much and it looks pretty tidy there.Cheers

Back in October 2009 I got my compressor and tier kit for free when I fitted both front and rear Lockers, the deal still cost me $3400 or so but that was the deal.

I mounted mine in a storage box in the back of my 40 on the wheel arch

One of the Guys at my work was looking at mounting his compressor in behind the trim over the rear wheel arch in his Jeep, apparently there is enough room in behind there, yet his engine bay has zero room for extra items.
