60 series diff into 75-same diff!?

got a mate that has a spare 60 series diff sitting around in his backyard and he wants to know if he can put it into a 75 series 3f petrol ute.

the 60 series is diesel (2h) and 75 is petrol (3f) so the diff gears would be different wouldnt they?

there both disc brake front end so i cant imagine it being to hard but just want to make sure cause its a daily driver.

wont fit without moving spring perches 60 housing is wider +-3"

Id like to know how people go about moving the spring perches on a 60 housing to make it fit in the front of 40/70 series.

So when the DS perch wants to sit in the diff centre and you cannot get a U bolt installed, what do you do? I dont think you understand the application properly.. If it were as simple as doing what you said, I would not have asked the question.

It is that simple, cut old ones off, weld new ones in, just you have to cut a chunk out of the housing to fit the new one in.

60 axles in a 40 won't work like that in the front, you need to out board the spring hangers. not that hard to do.

60 rear in a 40 will work with new perches, there is enough room on the 60 axle housing, and the 40 chassis is wider in the back.

there are heaps of build ups and info on exactly this on ih8mud. i'm sure there are a few here on outer as well.

a quick search will find you HOURS of reading and tons of pics of 60 axles in 40's and 55's and a few 70's IIRC.

i know nothing about 70's, but i do know the centers will fit.

Rear is easy, cut off old mounts and weld on new mounts in the correct position for the leaves. Use a 60 series hand brake cable and your pretty much set.

Front is ALOT more work, can either outboard the springs or cut into the housing, we chose to cut into the housing. Some pics!

Only runs one U bolt on the outside, the inner side uses two bolts that screw into the 12mm plate that is cut into the housing

There is nothing there that deals with the inner short side U bolt problem. Outboarding springs is not an option for some.

No pics, bolts just work through the standard holes. Been in for a few months now with 36''s, no problems.

The advantage with the 70 series is that theres 10mm more width to work with, thats 5 more that you can spare in the notch.. that is significant with this type of modification..

diff gear ratios will be different. im not sure about width, but his center should bolt straight into the other if he just wanted the housing.

there is lots of info/pics, you just have to read it... :roll:

out boarding the springs is not the only way to do it by a long shot.

I've read all that, seen all those pictures.

The axle housing extension is the most elegant solution, however that introduces not standard axle lengths, something that people might not want..

The lowenbrau notch and tapping block is probably the neatest execution of the notch I've seen so far..

Then theres the RuffStuff solution..

I am still interested in what others have done..

Diff ratios are the same for most 40,60 and 70 series cruisers. They might be the odd 3.7 ratio out there though.
