MQ Patrol gearbox question

Does anyone know if the 4 speed gearbox from a LWB MQ diesel is the same as a 4 speed gearbox from a SWB MQ L28 petrol? Are they interchangeable? Same bellhousing bolt up pattern?
Cheers

boxes are identicle .....( sorry guys ).....
But everything else associated is different .... ( your right guys )
The bellhousing from a diesel is totally different from a petrol belhousing
but you can use the bellhousing off of either boxes to suit your rig.
Another difference is the top cover on the actual gearbox... the diesel gearshifter goes into the box about the middle but the petrol goes in nearly at the rear. see the pics below, of the 2 boxes pictured one is a 4 spd and the other is a 5 spd. The 5 spd is the box with the extra 135mm in the back of the box in the form of an alloy housing !!, other than the 5th gear housing they are the same.
Obviously the gear shifter will be in the wrong place as you can see...
solution is easy tho....... swap the top covers and gearshifters over
The other hickup will be the transfer shifter.....again its different but again just swap them around !!, its pretty easy as the petrol box's topcover has the linkage setup allready attached so it's straight foward.
And the final problem is the front shaft. The diesel is shorter.....ALOT shorter !!!
You could ofcourse swap the two shafts over if you were desperate !!
As you can see there are a few ugly diferances between the 2 boxes but nothing major that a competent mechanic shouldnt be able to get past.
May I ask as to why you want to do this changeover ???? is you box stuffed or just in need of a new set of bearings ????
I rebuilt a 4 spd box not long back and it cost just under $300 for all new stuff. the box is as sweet as now !

p/s
there is probably 4 or 5 spare 4 spds in the shed to suit a petrol motor is ya desperate.

Why do I want to do what I asked? Long story....
Basically I am looking at buying a SWB MQ with the L28 4 speed (it has a Ford 4.1 engine bolted to it). The 3rd gear syncro is stuffed in the gearbox. I do have coming a 4 speed gearbox out of a LWB MQ Patrol diesel (the guy bought my SD33T motor and 5 speed, and he is giving me his old 4 speed). Sooo, I wondered if it would be an easy swap.
So from what you have said V8Patrol, I could swap the 4 speed's over? I shouldn't be touching the bellhousing in theory...it can stay on the engine.
Am I correct or confused?

Yeha you can do what you are asking without to much of a headace happining, the main thing will be the front shaft differances. In the pics I posted above you can clearly see the differances in both the length of the shafts and also the length of the clutch plate spline. this is where you will have the problems.
As for the length differances it's not hard to overcom bu simply making a longer spigot bush that will pick up the shorter front diesel shaft.
This then only leaves the clutch plate spline problem wich will depend on the actuall setup you are running..... it may pay to fit the diesel clutch and pressure plates ( they are also a heavier duty setup over the petrol one )
