Transfer mounted disk handbrake bj 40

Hi all, just chasing some leads on a tranfer mounted disk handbrake for my 40 series.
Im running an fj62 transfer case, in place of the standard early 40's unit with the rear mounted drum, and was planning a rear disk conversion aswell, which dosn't allow for a wheel mounted handbrake caliper.
Have found this one from the states, but was hoping for something local.
http://www.tsmmfg.com/4066.htm
I called Marks Adaptors and they no longer make them, and the 47's transfer drum handbrake conversion reduces my already very short rear tail shaft by another 3", so is not really a viable option.
Any help would be appreciated.
thanks
Craig

I am slowly, very slowly, doing a rear disc conversion. I am going with the Subaru front brakes as they have the handbrake (mechanical) built into the calliper.

I was talking to the bloke from eureka offroad and he told me the subaru calipers were too small.
My 40 has the full floating rear axles aswell, which i think stops me from doing that conversion.
Can anyone set me straight on this?

My prime aim is to convert my semi-floating rear end to a full floating and in the process while everything is stripped I plan to do the disc conversion. It has been done by others and from what I believe a success. Hell, anything will be better than what I have at the moment. Looking around for a diff housing at the moment. Have all of the diff guts and new rotors as well just need a housing. If you here anything from an actual owner/user then please post it up.

I have done the subaru caliper rear disc conversion on my 60 series. To be bluntly honest, if I had to do rear discs again I would either cut the ends of an 80 housing and graft/weld them to a 60 housing, or look at using EA rear calipers with solid discs, or getting a set of "metric" GM calipers as shown here:
http://www.tsmmfg.com/3110.htm
the reason being as I find my handbrake does not hold on a reasonable slop, it slowly creeps. Not good at the boat ramp....

use the drum set up from a later model 47 series with te split case it just bolts on
i am running a 60 series case u will need to swap the out put shaft from the 47 as well as it is slightly longer
all easyly done in a few hours no mod plate and all factory parts
does it really reduce the drive shaft by 3 " ??? maybe 1.5 or 2

I need all the driveshaft i can get, the b series diesel is gone and in its place is a 5.0v8 and t700 box, add onto that the Marks transfer adapter and 60 series transfer case and theres not much shaft left.
I was worried about the subaru calipers holding ability, thats why I like the idea of the transfer handbrake, with its 4:1 mechanical advantage over the wheels.
Might have to suck it up and order the seppo disk jobbie.

Hey cluffy, have you done your rear disc conversion yet?
Maybe look at using ea-eb falcon rear calipers and solid discs, might be better that the Subaru. The other issue with Subaru calipers is they are really suited to discs with a 230mm diameter, whereas the Ford EA EB calipers are for a 287mm diameter disc. due to this the Subaru calipers dont sit on the disc properly with out some modification, that involved grinding them to fit.......
Only issue with EA EB calipers is you will have to use solid discs

WB statesman calipars have a Mech handbrake setup on them. Thats what I have used to do my rear disc conversion (MQ Diff, changed that to a GQ Drum Diff)
As for the T-case handbrake.. let me know!

Just got an email back from the handbrake company, about $470.00 aus landed here, sounds like a good deal. I suppose I just have to hope the DOT approves it for rego.
No i haven't done the conversion yet, was probably just going to get them from eureka offroad, about $500 a pair. Seems a little steep but i suppose thats reasonable for the disks, brackets etc.

I called them a while ago about those, approx $1500.
The Hoppers bloke said they were designed for slow moving, underground mine utes and they tend to drag and wear out quick at speed.

Interesting, as the caliper used appears very similar (almost identical) to the caliper used on boat trailers (this is the hand/park brake setup I am talking about) Haven't heard issued with boat trailers.....

I'm liking the look of the

I'm in the same boat at the moment, FJ40 with a 60 series gearbox.
I would prefer not to order the kit from America but it does seem like a good option at the moment.

Looks the same as the hilux one, just with different mounting plate. Give Mick a ring at Superior Eng. He should be able to make one up the same as the states one.

Whatever you get organised Mike, make sure you let me and Andrew know before you do anything as this is something all three of us are looking to do...

Spoke to Mick @ superior, they don't make one they use to but it was pretty useless so they stopped making them. He doesn't recommend the
http://www.tsmmfg.com/4066.htm for the same reason, they struggled to hold a hilux.
He said maybe look into trailer setups?
He also said Eureka off road were working on something, so i called them. Yes they are working on something but its not ready and there is no completion date and it sounded pretty expensive. But he did say the cheapest and easiest way would be to grab the rear drum / axle from a 1982-1984 FJ which should have the handbrake on the rear drums.

Good that you spoke to Mick as it could have been a waste of money to get one from the states and not be happy with it.
Good luck on your search.
