Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Looking at coiling up the rear end of the hilux- And have two options....

1) use a surf/4Runner rear end. Its a lot less mucking about to make it work properly as it just welds in, but it also still has drum brakes on the rear end, and im unsure how much wider the track is on the Runner rear end is compared to the hilux. Theres a rear end of a runner on ebay for $400 at the moment...


2) Use a 95 series prado rear end. Will gain 40mm of track over the hilux rear end and disk brakes. Cost for a prado rear chassis cut is $1250.


Im not sure on two things- Will the hilux 8" diff bolt into the prado housing, or do i need to get a prado diff and change the ratios to 4.5:1.

And are the disk brakes that can be signed off by an engineer no worries worth the extra moolah over the rear drums?

Will have to change brake master + booster to work properly.
Early Prado and 4Runner/Surf (IFS rear) are the same width.

Prado rear is the same rear set up an 80 has (shoes for hand brake inside rotor for disc foot brake).

Rear 8" centre the same as what you currently have.

Yer go the prado rear end, The widths are the same as IFS lux and the diffs are the same. They have slightly longer trailing arms then the 4runner/surf also and can use the same coil.

Grab the master cylinder at the same time as you need it for the disc/disc proportioning. You could prob keep the factory master cylinder if u used an adjustable aftermarket proportion valve. You will prob have to mod the handbrake setup also but the prados cable position is similar to the hilux.

You may want to upgrade the front calipers to V6 items also to keep the front bigger then the rear. May be worth seeing if the prado front calipers can be made to fit the hilux knuckles.

my father is going to be soooooo pissed when he comes home and his prado is missing a brake caliper to see if it fits mine!

Luckilly i have a set of KZN130 surf calipers sitting here at the moment from my half cut, so those could wind up being fitted if the prado ones dont work!

Thats one thing i like about the prado diff is that the handbrake cable is very similar in setup to the hilux's- runs across the diff from one cable, not two individual cables.

Now to dig my bloody IFS knuckles back out of the scrap steel bin so i can widen the front end up to match the rear... Dad threw them out without asking!

Yer the KZN130 calipers should be the bigger units and a bolt on.
