Hi Guys,
I am thinking of converting my 2.8 GU to RB25det, been told that it's a straight forward conversion. Can anybody help me out on some details please?

any reason why you want to get rid off the 2.8. if its because of the power have you tryed not driving it like a truck and like a normal car

It will be interesting when all these converted hybrid ricer GU's end up on the forsale section and the folks end up going back to 4.2 diesels or big petrols.
I would suggest driving one before doing the conversion, IMO the RB30 was only just barable when turboed in a GQ and useless off road.
It wont be long before someone suggests putting an RB20 into a GU simply because it can be done.

yea an rb25t in its origanal car r33 takes alot of work to get goin (ive biult a few) and an r33 ways in at bout 1.3 ton gu loaded up would be closer to 3 tones i think. Kinda think of it as putting a 1000cc R1 engine into a falcon it wont do much. have u thought bout buidingup the 2.8 a bit. IMO

Ive been in a 2.8 GU that has been converted to an RB25DET and i can tell you its a good thing.
The RD28's injector pump shit the tin, and it was going to cost roughly $2500 to get it recoed, and replaced.
$2500 also bought a complete RB25DET from an R34 Skyline, with pretty much EVERYTHING you need available OFF THE SHELF.
This truck has been on many club trips with us, and it has kept up with, if not exceeded the capabilites of many 4.2 turbos, some with a bit of work done.
This truck went from under 100rwkw with the RD28 to somewhere around 200rwkw with the R34 NEO engine.
This conversion looks so stock its not funny, and i think its one of the best conversions ive seen.
Very impressed with it, has been bullet proof so far, tows a 16ft van all over the place too.

i wouldnt go the RB25 but a RB30 in a gq is hardly crap of road, check vid below and this was with near bald all terrains.......this car had left some much bigger setups winching while it "struggled" up
And in the first vid you can hear the throttle being played with on off on off, plenty in reserve.

on road performance with the old stock internal motor on only 10psi at nearly 2.5 tonne

RB25det in a patrol is a dumb idea.
I have a 25 in my 31 and while its good in that.. its gunna suck dragging round a 3tonne patrol......
If u must go a 6 put a rb30 in it with a 25 head on top of it.. now theres a decent combo.... probably still not ideal for 4wding tho...

yea yea yea this is wat u need ive built 1 in a skyline. RB30 turbo bottom end (turbo block has piston oil squirters). then get an RB26dett head then custom manifold with twin gt35/40r tubos ,custom plenum with twin 600 cc injectors per runner(gives better idle then 1200cc injectors) internals jun 3.3ltr stroker kit and run it all with a apexi power fc pro.

Sounds like a great setup, if I want 1200hp, boost starting at 5800 rpm, 45psi splitting the bores and my self on the cover of the biggest ricer/dyno queen magazine.

"I thought i might post up a pic of my engine conversion. After picking up a 2.8L GU for a good price i quickly got bored with the rd28's lack of any sort of acceleration . There wasn't any decent factory GU engines to consider so i pulled it out and put a rb25det in it from a r33 skyline . They have 185kw stock and with exhaust and some boost more like 250kw. So heres a couple pics. As you can expect it goes alot better now. I tried to make it look as factory as possible "
from later in the thread...
Bolted ona HKS gt-rs turbo also so should make some decent power. 300-350rwhp would be nice . Its getting about 500k;s to a tank untuned so hopefully will be better. Towed a 1tonne trailor today not a problem the 3L torque makes it alot easier . Im on holidays now so will definetely be some vids coming up as will be going away on a few trips.

Don't know why some say the RB25\30 turbo motors are too small for a Patrol.
You can set up the boost to come in quite low in the Rev range, change the Diff ratios, then it will drive just as good as any other motor in a Patrol, and in most case's be cheaper than replacing what's already in there
.
I say do it, it's been done before so you wont be breaking new ground
.
People should remember that for aguments sake:
100 kw is 100 kw, and 300nm is 300nm, it does'nt care what makes it, just that it's there

Hi All,
I have just finished putting an RB25DET in my GU. A full writeup can be found here
http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42972.
There seems to be a lot of mixed opinions about this conversions. I did it because it was cheap and an interesting project. I haven't had a change to test it off road so I cant make a judgement on that yet.
I am pretty happy with how it drives on the road though. The engine is out of an R33 Skyline and is completely stock at the moment. It is so much nicer to drive than the 2.8. Heaps more power and the turbo lag is much less noticeable. I have had a drive of a 100 Series 4.5 Petrol Landcruiser and it is very similar to that in the way it drives. The Patrol is probably a bit quicker in a straight line. With a few modifications I think it will go pretty well.
I was a bit skeptical about how it would go but it goes surprisingly well. I would suggest having a drive of one before knocking the idea. It all depends what you want out of your 4X4.
