how hard is it to pull out the lower ball joint out on the passenger side of a Mitsubishi Pajero , does the cv shaft have to come out in order to get the lower ball joint out.

The drive shaft doesn't have to come out. According to the repair manual, once you've undone everything attached to the ball joint you "should" be able to wiggle it out.

I couldn't get mine out and ended up removing the lower control arm.

Remove the cv circlip and tie rod end to allow more travel of the hub assembly. Sometimes you need to remove the steering stop

I had one hell of a job splitting the lower ball joint from the knucle (was pulling the driveaxle to change CV boots). I used a ball-joint splitter and a big hammer and quite a lot of :bad-words: but it wouldn't budge.
Next step was to get some heat on to the knucle but just unbolted the ball joint from the lower arm instead.

I have always got mine off with a Feckin Big Hammer. And a set of earmuffs as it's loud! :D

Hit the side where the ball joint goes into and the jolt from the FBH loosens it. I put a bit of leverage on it with a pry or jemmi bar as well, usually comes within 5 or 6 blows.
