a hour ago i was driving home after just purchasing a 86 rangie 4.4L when oil pressure light came on so i stopped and checked oil it was fine but when i started again it had a slight rattle (tappet) so i shut it down again any way each time i started it the sound increased until the last time it started to miss ............could this be the oil pump now it wont start sounds like the valves arent opening any ideas and would anyone have a diagram of a oil pump. im still 250ks from home !!!!!!!!!!

Mick,
Check the pressure relief valve isn't jammed open,it's a known problem with the rover V8's that I know of.It's the large hex plug near the oil filter, remove that and check the plunger is free in the bore.

Thanks Eric. It's not the plunger, pulled pump apart, turned motor by hand, gear not driving.

I would say that the oil pump drive gear on the dizzy is either busted or was never aligned properly. Could also be timing chain/ gear and camshaft related.
