Hi all i currently have a td42 factory diesel auto wagon, it has a lowmount denco kit on it currently and wishing to get more torque and power for towing the camper.. The auto will be getting overhauled soon to a fully manualized auto box to help with power loss and better drivability offroad.. Any input would be appreciated cheers.

from memory they all have the same turbine wheel it is just the compressor wheel that is bigger so most shops would suggest the gt2860 (disco potato). basically the 2860 will come on boost real early and then the 2871 later and ten the 2876 later again. gt2860 will set you back around 1500 plus fitting kit so you be looking at aroundd 2000 min.
i would say the gt 2860 will be about the best. i was told this when i was wanting to chage the turbo on my 1hdt but i went for the 2871 just to be a little different. mate also pm dzltec on here he can help or giant racing on here i have heard he has put a couple of gt2871 on some gu with good result.

G'day Josh whats wrong with your denco turbo? Whats your budget? Have you tried a gated boost controller to stop waste gate creep?

would like something new so i thought i would throw it out there to see what people have done as when i put the new turbo on it will be intercooled with the new gearbox and highflow pump so i have good reliability when in the middle of no where im not stuck there with a blown turbo etc when i should of put a new one on...
was also thinking of a gt3076 anyone used this turbo??

mate i think that turbo will be to big. if you read this thread he has used a gt3071 and says on page for that if he could do it again he would use the gt2876. even my gt2871 is a little laggy but i havent had any pump adjustments as of yet.
http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/ftopic174092.php
also check out this page you can compare the turbos you are looking at for size and make sure that what ever turbo you go for has the .64 a/r turbine side .86 will be to laggy

So is the gt2860 the same as the gt28rs and will it bolt onto a factory td42t manifold.

Thanks mate i can get a Garrett Gt2860rs, Polished, .60 A/R .86 rear, needs new oil seal. The guy said is runs fine just blew smoke.
I can get a mate to rebuild it pretty cheap. It will cost around $250.
Will this be fine for my TD42 and is it worth the money. I don't really no much about turbo's.
Cheers, Shane

Hi mate, .64 rear would be better, full boost is reached earlier than a .86 housing. For that price it would be hard to pass up

A mate has a 2876r. Slightly laggy. But I dont think that will be so much of a problem with an auto.
I am just going to go with a disco spud on mine. But its an abused engine.. If it was a fresh engineI would go the next size down to the 2876r. As its a little brutal when it comes on boost.

But do these mount straight onto a factory TD42T manifold or do i need to get a adapter.

Have a read through this topic on patrol4x4. He has done the same conversion and most of your questions have probably been asked and answered on there.

A mates TD42 runs a very tricked up GT2871! Scary fast for a Diesel!
Contact MTQ in Toowoomba or Rocky!
My evidence is in Mark Thomas coming second for the XWC series!
His turbo work is done by MTQ rockhampton!
Their work is great! in my opinion always great to deal with!

Definately better to get a bb turbo rather than hiflowing the hitachi. BB will spool up quicker and give a better power/torque curve. I think you'll find the price to hiflow will be as much as a new turbo? All you need is a t3/t2 adaptor plate to suit a gt28 series turbo.

been through this before somewhere.
The GT2860rs with .64 housing is best turbo for most guys.
Unless you're doing big fuel upgrades and intercoolers etc then you can move up to the GT30 series turbos.
Ball Bearing is far better than the old journal bearing turbos.
a well tuned TD42 will love that turbo and be good for up to 200hp easy as long as you intercool it, have a decent exhaust on it etc.

My little SD33T goes like a cut snake with a GT2860RS .64 hot side....
I reckon a 2871 with a .64 hotside would be the go for you. The 2871R (743347-5002) doesn't come with a .64 hotside so you would need a custom job and combine it with a 774147-5001 hotside and the 743347-5002 compressor and housing.

what he means in english is:
use a GT28 cartridge with a larger compressor wheel (that's where the 71 comes from), and put a smaller exhaust housing on it to make it spool up faster. That's a good turbo if you're chasing more power I guess but it still spools markedly slower that the 2860RS and on a truck that doesn't exactly rev hard or high, early boost can mean it's better to drive on and off road.
