how much to build a buggy?

not sure if this should be general discussion or events / comps?
a lot of blokes can justify 10+ grand on a boat... which sits in the yard and becomes a pot plant... or sits in the garage while the $50k car rusts in the driveway. anyway... my point is - surely the missus can see that a crawling buggy is akin to a boat and therefore an essential part of the household... or something.
anyway...
without giving too much away - how much dollars would you realistically budget for a buggy? and then double it
can you buy a chassis in au? ive seen some advertised in the US but i'd imagine the importing would be exxy?
i know some of you guys have already done this.... surely im not the only one to watch these things in action and think "i wonder how much for one of those toys"??

Like this kick-ass looking machine?
It's for sale for $8800.
To make it yourself... they (
rhino buggies) claim that it can be built for as little as $1500, based on getting a donor vehicle for under $500.
The donor vehicle is an early 80s Subaru, so that's not implausible.

All the buggies in au have been built here, if your not building it yourself, and paying somone else to build it all, id say a cool 20k in your pocket will get you a very trick rig, but if your doing it all your self and can weld and bend tube you could get away with a buggy for 10k

It really depends on what you want and what you can afford!!!
If you are really KEEN i suggest you PM Strangerover and have a chat!
There are many different levels in which you can get yourself into a buggy, i would say the cheapest set-up would be around the 10-12k mark for a very basic (but super capable) tube buggy!
It also depends on what you can do yourself!
If you just want a TUBE frame bent up and welded together and then do the rest yourself you could maybe get out a little cheaper!
Then on the other hand if you have a lasy 25k laying around you could end up with somthing like mine!

Not to take anything away from the QLD guys,They do a great job.
But if you want a buggy I can also build anything to your liking, whether it be a full tube buggy like my new toy or a tube buggy built off a rolling chassis.Pricing will vary depending on how much you want done and what type of setup you would like.I'm located in NSW,so if you want any info PM me...

cool thread..
it is susprisingly cheap. once you aren't worried about the RTA and you can use whatever you want, it works out quite well. the steel is reasonably priced, all the bits and pieces from race shops or ag shops or whatever work out much cheaper than run of the mill automotive parts too..

the big thing is what are you going to use it for. If it is just as a toy then you will be restricted to private property or 4wd parks. If it is for comp work then check with the organising about requirements before you stat building so you don't have to rebuild.
When building custom stuff the major cost is having to ship work out to other people. if you can do alot of the work yourself you will save big$$$. Use commonly available parts and incoporate them into your design.
Research, research some more and then do some research. Do right first time to save time and money.
After all that you should be able to build something under $10 000 if you use our head. Or you could spend $100 000 if you really want a bling rock crawling buggy like some of the US stuff

Don't forget to factor in a tow rig an trailer ..... otherwise you will be wheeling around in your front yard, and btw a U-haul may not be strong enough to haul you rig, i.e. the trailer can ususally only carry 1100KG
so hiring one could be a problem.
Just one more thing to consider

POS and Wendle have both just finished building buggies, so has fourwheelin.
I think all you have to do is look in the members section and you will get build pics and rough estimates on parts costs etc. For each of these three rigs.
Sam may sell his orange one, which is similar to POS's so maybe start throwing some numbers at him. I know come November every year he builds a new rig, for the new season.

Or at least cause he gets bored late in the year, perhaps he needs to buy a TV or something!!
