my gq got the death wobbles up in the frount end on the highway it was very violent its a every now and then thing any one have any ideas?

bushs, bearings, balanced tyres...... etc could be a few things.

a search for death wobble, or shakes (not me) will bring up hundreds of relevant posts

panhard bushes are the first easy stop, as is a wheel alignment... then onto king pins and bearing condiditon and tire balance

panhard bushes. just try tightening up the bolts either end of the panhards and see if it makes a difference. 9 times outta 10 it will. if it does change the bushes out.

could be steering dampener had the same thing happen to me and that is what it ended up been

It will never be the steering damper, your new damper is just hiding some other issue.

Fixed another Patrol with wobbles today, turned out to only be poor wheel balance, but as others said the panhard rod bushes are a likely culprit.

well chunks i put a new damper on and it has not done the death wobbles since and that was about a 1year ago so yeah it fixed my problem but you can think whatever you want to think but it worked for me bye

Ok mate, I hope your steering damper doesn't shit itself in the middle of nowhere mate because its going to be a wobbly drive home.

Had the same wobble at 60km but went away at 65km, had a cracked power steering hose so thought that was the issue, the wobble went away after the hose was replaced but also had really fcuked castor bushes as well. My thoughts were similar to what chunks is saying that basically parts of the steering were compensating for a larger problem but the bushes were replaced soon after so couldn't say for sure. In saying all this haven't had the wobble since.
Good luck on the mish, its not a nice one to fix

i have had 2 patrols with this and i have managed to completly remove it in my currant one following this rule

1) when you get death Wobbles look at the wheels if you can, it it looks like the diff is moving side to side, its either panhard and/or Castor bushes

2) when you get death wobbles look at the wheels if you can, if it looks like the wheel is turning in and out (as if its trying to turn on you without your turning the wheel) you have tie rod/draglink problems or a bearing/balance problem

did number 1 on this patrol when i first got it, and it still did it, sat it on jacks and moved the wheels, saw them move without the tie rod move, looked at the links and they were shagged

tighten the screw on top of your steering box, it fixed my death wobbles

well said totally agree with all this,

When i was running 33x12.5r15's, Sometimes when i would air down to off road mine used to spit the balance weights off the rims causing this, but yeah check all the above.

Another thing that will cause death wobbles is bias belted tyres in cold weather. Left sitting overnight, they get a big flatspot on the bottom. I checked everything in my front end and it would still do it in the morning. I took off the centipedes and threw on the Big Horns and fixed!
