Hilux 2 piece shaft breakage

Dunno if this is common? But while trying to drive a ledge something went " TINK " Sheared right through the spline. Maybe it was the power of the 22RE

It is not that common but that is the weekest point of the shaft
I fit one piece tailshafts and do away with the center bearing

I've got a Marlin Dual case waiting to go in shortly, have to do all the shafts then anyway.

Hey Toyrex,
With the 1 piece shaft,
you need a double-cardan joint for this??
Do you hit the tailshaft on stuff?
I thought the 4-runners have a 1-piece shaft cause they have
a shorter wheelbase than the single cab lux?
Wouldn't this leave the shaft effectively more exposed to damage
as it will go straight from the diff to the transfer, not from diff to
collar to transfer?
Also, does the 1-piece give more vibration at speeds due to
the lack of support in the middle?
(or is this why you use the d.cardan joint?)

I have an LN46 lux with a one piece shaft. No double cardan joint though and get no vibs at any speed. Can be expensive to get retubed if you bend them. Got a quote for $300 to retube and got a second hand one for $250. It is more exposed but have only hit it once climbing over big trees. Haven't had a prob on rock steps or anything else.

what did u do i had a v8 in mine + lsd diff did burnouts with it ive never snapped one

Hi Bart
I have both Hilux Dual cab 91 model and a 86 4 runner and there is about 200mm differance in the wheel base
I have hi pinion diffs fitted and that lifts the tailshaft about 130mm
I prefer the hi pinion as it lifts the tailshaft away of rocks weeds and wire
and other nasties you dont want to fine when you are of road also it takes alot of the angle out of the universals
No I do not have a double cardon joint fitted
I used landcruiser tube when I went one piece
No vabrations as the shaft was balanced when I had it retubed
