Outer Limits 4x4 Board

so we dont have spark! school me on coils!

Background is a Nt sierra LWB which had been converted to run a corrolla 4a (carbi) in 1996. we have now fitted a 4age (efi) in its place.

everything is done - so we think. computer wired up fuel pump etc all sorted.

engine turns over and we have fuel but not spark.

The old engine had a bosch coil with a simple +ve and negative terminal - should we be able to use this with simply a positive and earthed wire? or would something important be missing such as rev counter or similar?

the new engine came with a coil and plug for the loom. the loom has 4 wires for the coil, and the coil earths through its own casing.

we get 5v permanently through 1 wire, and 1-2 volts when the ignition is turned on, but nothing from the other 2 wires. what are they for? rev counter for the ecu or something?

does any sparky genious know what we should be getting from the 4 wires volts wise?

That's the first coil I've heard of that earths through it's casing.

Every other coil I've ever seen has +12 supplied, and the -ve is switched by points (old school) or an electronic control module of some kind. Something needs to switch the coil current, which creates a collapsing magnetic field, which in turn induces the voltage to create your spark.

I don't know about your setup, but when I converted my car, it has coil, a transistor module (to switch the coil) and a sensor in the distributor (to tell the transistor module when to switch).

Can you identify what switches your coil?

99% sure it earths through its body on the new one (not the old one).

On top of the coil is.. (to risk sounding like i have no fing idea) a cast block with circuitry inside. this board earths through the coil mount. so im fairly sure it does earth through its body.

So something on the dizzy should also be connected into the loom somewhere?

This would make sense, I will check it out.
